Gong Restaurant is tucked away from the main part of Sanur, so unless you are staying at Kayumanis Sanur Private Villas you are going to need to grab a driver or a taxi to get there (it is on the other side of Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai).
The restaurant is located inside the grounds of the villas and is an open-air dining area under a traditional pavilion. The tranquil garden setting in the evening creates such a relaxed and lovely ambience to dine in. As there aren't a lot of tables, so I'd strongly suggest booking in advance.
For dinner we had the Sari Laut Bakari (grilled marinated prawn, squid and fish fillet served with vegetables urab and lemongrass chilli sauce) - IDR140 and the Bali Sea Voyage. For the most part the seafood was perfectly cooked - the squid was tender, the fish was moist - a couple of the prawns however were overcooked and almost mushy (not good). For desert we finished with Pisang Goreng, which was a bit heavy, probably should have asked for the Kolak Pisang.
The cocktails were nice but slightly watery - need a better mixologist on staff.
In summary we had a nice romantic dinner but it didn't hit...
Read moreWe decided to have local food at Gong Restaurant on our final evening in Sanur before leaving Bali and we're happy we did!
The place is beautiful and remote (yet quite in the centre of Sanur). The restaurant has a cosy and relaxing atmosphere- it is located in the middle of a typical Indo garden with beautiful plants and lights.
We had Beef Pancake and 'kroket' to share as starters, which were both very tasty, the sauce they came with was delicious! Our main dishes were Soto Ayam chicken soup with boiled egg and a Nasi with seafood. The squid could have been grilled slightly longer but was just good, while shrimps and Barramundi had great seasoning. Be sure to try their local white wine, it was great with the food we ordered
A special thanks to Tirta who was our waiter for the evening: his detailed explanation and kindness made the evening an even better experience. No wonder Gong Restaurant is in the...

We had the Otak Otak (fish cake wrapped in leaves) and Gado Gado (Indonesian salad) as starters. We ate Otak Otak several times before in Singapore and these ones were pretty bland. Unfortunately this was to be the common theme.
Our mains were Rendang and pork ribs. We had high expectations for the Rendang - it’s one of our favorite Indonesian dishes and we had it many times before. Unfortunately, this was probably the worst one yet. The beef was tough and dry while it should be soft, moist and almost falling apart. The cubes were too big for the sauce and flavors to properly penetrate. Unfortunately the pork ribs weren’t much better - none of that char flavor we were hoping for.
Service was very attentive, friendly and quick throughout. The setting of the restaurant is also quite nice. But all this doesn’t help if the food quality...
