We had the privilege of spending a family lunch there today. We were unsure given there were no other customers present. Nevertheless, we had a go.
The kids had their usual kiddy meals - fish and chips plus homemade chicken fingers. It all looked to be made with care and attention. That doesn’t always occur with kid meals sadly.
Us adults had ikan goreng (fried fish) with five flavoured sauce and dendeng belado. Plus sides of stir fried water spinach and terong belado (eggplant with chilli/tomato based sauce). It was all great. Other than reducing the chilli factor, they didn’t try to alter the dishes to placate the tourists. The ikan goreng was a whole fried fish. Cooked with bones, it has much better flavour than some fillet you usually get.
Altogether, a top meal. I always worry that by trying to appeal to tourists, local eateries can lose a bit of authenticity. White Orchid seemed to have struck a...
Read moreI wish we could give half stars here because I didn’t quite love my main dish (Indonesian prawn curry), but it was solid, the corn cakes were really good, and the service here is just incredible, which is why I ultimately went with a 5 star review instead of 4. If I even looked in a waiter’s direction someone was signaled to check on me. I appreciate that level of care and effort to ensure a diner’s satisfaction. Based on the corn cake and other reviews I’m willing to assume that other dishes here are really good, so I didn’t want to penalize such a hard-working staff for (me) ordering something that didn’t perfectly suit my palate. Overall, a nice place and I might have to go back eventually to settle the 4 vs 5 star...
Read moreI really don't give lower scores for cafes. But this place really wasn't up to our expectations. Also, based on other reviews, we expected more of the place. A couple of the plates had chips in them. 2 of our billed had extra items in them. Which no one ordered. One person had steak, and no better or sharper knife was offered. It's fsily normal to get a steak knife with beef. The salad I ordered really was inedible. It's nearly impossible to mess up salad. They did apologise for that. Also, when the 2 guitar players came on, the volume got louder as the night went in. By the time we left, it was hard trying to talk with each other. Of all the meals we had in sanur in the week we were there, this...
