We went here around 16:00 so were the only people apart from 1 other here. Tables varied from couples to large groups from sofa type chairs to high bar style which should appeal to most, there are also a couple of tables outside if you like to eat and watch the world go by. We ordered the tuna titaki, a vegetarian protein bown, fish wrap, protein smoothie and a ginger lemon honey tea. The protein smoothie was really tasty with a heavy peanut flavour, this is also very thick and not very thirst quenching. The tea was nice but was overpowered by the lemon flavour hardly tasting the ginger. The food ordered was a very good portion size and well presented. The protein bowl I had was fantastic! Loaded with quinoa, Japanese beans, green leaves, boiled eggs and not tight on the avocado either! My girlfriends wrap was good but she enjoyed the tuna more. She did say that the wasabi sauce was very weak with the tuna, I think because she is Thai and accustomed to spicy foods that the wasabi tasted weak for her, most places where westerners eat will make a wasabi or spicy sauce weak for their palates so dont expect a strong wasabi sauce. There are a few general Japanese dishes on the menu like Ramen but it would of been nice to see more like yakisoba or okinimiyaki but a fusion restaurant wont have many of the traditional favourites For all the dishes we had and drinks it came to around 420,000IDR. There are quite a few dishes for vegetarians, also dishes that have a vegetarian option. We also saw Indonesian favourites like Nasi goreng.
Overall a nice place to enjoy food and a place we will return to especially...
Read moreWe had the pleasure of dining at Happy Banana, a wonderful sushi restaurant in the enchanting town of Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia. Our experience was so enjoyable that we decided to visit this place not just once, but twice during our stay.
On our first night, we were slightly disappointed as they had run out of salmon, which happens to be one of our favorite sushi ingredients. Nevertheless, we found that their tuna dishes more than made up for it. The tuna was remarkably fresh, tender, and packed with delightful flavors, leaving us thoroughly impressed.
What truly left an impression was the cozy ambiance at Happy Banana. It provided the perfect setting for a relaxed evening of indulging in delicious sushi. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring that we had a wonderful dining experience.
When we visited for the second time, we were thrilled to find that they had replenished their salmon supply. The salmon sushi we had that night was outstanding, reaffirming their commitment to top-quality ingredients.
Happy Banana isn't just a place for great sushi; it's a reflection of the warmth of Labuan Bajo, adding to the vibrancy of the town's food scene. The combination of scrumptious sushi, inviting atmosphere, and attentive service makes it an absolute must-visit for any sushi enthusiast passing through Flores. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to savor the delightful...
Read moreI ate here multiple times during my stay in Bajo and really appreciated that the menu included some vegan options. The food itself was quite good. Tasty, well-prepared, and satisfying.
However, I’m giving a low rating because we were repeatedly served dishes that were not vegan, despite clearly informing the staff that our entire group was vegan and verifying when ordering that each dish is vegan. This wasn’t a one-off miscommunication — it happened more than once, and only came to light when we insisted that the staff double-check with the kitchen.
This is a serious issue. People avoid animal products for many reasons, allergies, religious beliefs, ethical convictions… and serving non-vegan food to someone who has explicitly requested otherwise is unacceptable in any professional kitchen.
To make matters worse, the menu itself contains items labeled as vegan that are not. It’s not just a communication problem, it’s a lack of proper training and menu accuracy.
I sincerely hope the management takes this feedback seriously: update the menu to clearly and accurately label vegan items, and properly train staff to understand which dishes are actually vegan and why this matters. This restaurant has a lot of potential, but this kind of oversight can...
