A Parisian’s Disappointment: The Unfulfilled Promise of Bouchon
As a native of Paris, the city of lights and the cradle of haute cuisine, my expectations were sky-high when I decided to dine at Bouchon, a place that had been making waves as the “new French Warung”. However, my experience was so far from what I had anticipated that I am left contemplating whether I would ever consider returning.
The decor, while attempting to capture the essence of France, was a confusing mix of elements. Among the supposedly French decorations, I spotted items with English inscriptions. This was a jarring inconsistency for a place that claims to be a “French” establishment. It felt as if the authenticity of the French experience was compromised right from the onset.
The ambiance was a far cry from the French “joie de vivre” that I was eagerly anticipating. Instead of a relaxed, convivial atmosphere that one would associate with a French café, it felt more like a bustling business center. The gentleman seated next to me was conducting a loud conference call on his iPad, and I noticed two more patrons engrossed in their laptops. The lack of a relaxed, leisurely charm was a stark contrast to the French café culture that I was hoping to experience.
The service was the most disappointing aspect of my visit. It was so subpar that it warrants a score less than zero. I asked for a separate glass of water to accompany my pastis, a traditional French aperitif, and all I received was an empty glass. The waitress seemed to be inattentive to the point of negligence. She brought the main course before the starter, disrupting the traditional sequence of a French meal. When I pointed out the error, she reacted with annoyance, further dampening the dining experience.
After the starter, the waitress returned with my coq au vin, a classic French dish. However, my partner, who had ordered the same dish, was left waiting. She had to endure a wait of approximately 10 minutes for her main course. The lack of synchronization in serving identical dishes was baffling and reflected poorly on the restaurant’s service standards.
The staff’s lack of attention to detail was glaringly evident, and I left the place feeling extremely frustrated. I had been eagerly looking forward to the French Warung experience, but instead, I am now left with a place in Senopati where I vow never to set foot again.
The regret of spending close to 1 million Rupiah is compounded by the fact that the experience was utterly disappointing. I strongly advise against visiting this place. It is a disappointment of the highest order and should be avoided at all costs. The memory of this experience will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of authenticity and service in creating a memorable...
Read moreFood was so mid.. aku decided untuk coba bouchon today for dinner with my boyfriend and this is what we ordered : 1/2 rotisserie chicken Onion soup Steak frites Canelle Vanilla flan Vanilla caramel.
Okay so for us, the food was soo disappointing, its overly mid like the rotisserie chicken was okay, not dry but not juicy gmn banget juga. The flavour was so one dimensional even with the gravy. Chicken meat nya gaada rasa, i dont think it was marinated long enough.. and there is just simply no depth of flavour, gravy was meh as well. my family makes better rotisserie chicken than that.. , ga wow sama sekali for us. Bahkan kt hanya order 1/2 aja ga habis cuz menurut kt bener” ga worth the calories.
Black angus steak frites was also super mid as well.. no smokiness, the doneness wasnt right, it came pre sliced so yang med rare cmn 4-6 slices in the middle, samping” nya sooooo freaking dry. the sauce and gravy was again, meh. Rasa nya overall standard banget, ga worth its price. Again very one dimensional, no character at all in the dish.
Moving on to desserts, they used real vanilla beans but the pastry on the vanilla flan is too thick sampe hard to chew and or even cut with a knife, kayak nya kurang di laminate dough puff pastry nya jadi masih tebal layers nya. Canelle was dissapointing, parah ini gabisa berkata”, 1 bite and i was like.. no more. Vanilla caramel was mid, standard.
Ordered onion soup TWICE dan ga di input.. sampe selesai makan mains baru dibilangin lupa input.. padahal udah order nya sampe 2x.. but they did compensate us by not charging the vanilla caramel custard. So i guess its fine and forgiven.
Ambience was great tho, as expected from union group.
i did not set any expectations but it didnt even meet my standard of good food in general. I dont think we will return anytime soon.
Hopefully this can act as a feedback towards bouchon because i really did see potential and because of their previous restaurants being great, actually my go to (union), this visit was pretty...
Read moreWe had dinner there on Saturday 7 December for my husband's birthday. There was a special menu for the whole weekend: fondue savoyarde. Living in Jakarta for almost a year, I miss cheese very much and was very happy to find this event.
The venue itself looks good. The building from outside already put us in the mood. The atmosphere and ambience are great, we feel home in France. We didn't really checked the menu as we know we wanted the fondue but we saw a nice diversity of French entries and deserts.
We had the escargots (snails) as an entry. They were big and tasty. The sauce was very good. It comes with bread.
Then we had the truffle fondue. It is not a "real" fondue savoyarde but it was very good, made with Raclette cheese and Emmental. It came with a sausage, mushrooms, cornichons, baby potatoes, vegetables and of course toasted bread. The portion were good although we could have eaten way more cheese 😁
We choose two deserts : the raspberry and pistachio éclair as well as the Paris-Jakarta. Both were tasty.
We wanted to have the Riesling to accompany the meal but unfortunately it was sold out. We had Chardonnay with the meal and Ricard afterwards.
I told the staff it was my husband's birthday and they offered to write a personalised message for the desert as well as to sing happy birthday to him. It made the moment very special and I'm really thankful to the team for that.
The AC was not too strong as it normally is everywhere in Jakarta. It was perfect. My only recommendation would be to eventually have another playlist for the music.
We paid around...
