Been very curious about Gohyong in Indonesia and wondered if it tastes similar to the ngoh hiang that I have in my country, though pictorial wise they look pretty similar. Visited this place which is not too far from the hotel I was staying, also found it through some recommendation. It's located like in a small food court one of the most inner stalls from the main road closer to the entrance to the dining area. Was standing there not knowing what to order and the staff couldn't speak English, thankfully someone helped and also provided some recommendations. Order 3 dishes, initially thought might be sufficient since I decided to just eat them without having rice. First the chicken came. When I saw the chicken I tried to translate the menu to what I understood and it was the chicken in sweet and sour sauce. It was decent, nothing much to rave about, just an ordinary dish. The next came the fuyung egg which somehow I had some expectations of, but was disappointed when I started eating it. It tasted so different from the fuyung egg in Chinese Asian cuisine, they just added too much starch it somehow felt like eating bread with a thin layer of like an egg crepe inside. Too much flour which I didn't like it and I didn't finish the whole dish. Next came their "signature" which was the gohyong. The one in Chinese cuisine is a whole load of minced meat wrapped in a thin skin and fried, but this tasted quite disastrous. I couldn't taste much meat and again was just carb loaden. I didn't know if it was so much flour or it just tasted like glutinous rice stuffed inside. Very dense and very heavy. I tried to enjoy it but seriously I couldn't. I thought I was lucky not to have ordered any rice but seriously I didn't expect the dishes to be so carb loaded. Quite a nightmare for me, guess the experience was good enough will not visit gohyong stalls anymore. I didn't want to nail them down but I guess it just boils down to preference, maybe the locals love it this way and others are used to other variations...
Β Β Β Read moreWent here because of curiousity. It's viral on the internet. Therefore I gotta pay a visit.
My first impression is the food is going to be good. I love how the local street culinary is made. I ordered Gohyong and Hongkong fried rice and I waited. Then, my excitement was getting dull when I got to wait way too long.
Finally my order was served. From my first bite, I already wondered why do people love this food? I'm not saying the taste is bad, but there's nothing special at all. The Hongkong fried rice, I would say it's rather tasteless. I even didn't finish it. The Gohyong, which supposed to be special, is far from it. I felt this place is totally overrated. I think people come here because it's legendary. For myself, I'd say at least I've tried, but honestly, I don't think I will return since many other local street hawkers provide a much...
Β Β Β Read moreI think the food was overpriced, they tasted pretty good but the service was really disappointing. They lost my order and made my sister and i waited for more than 1 hour. When i came to them to ask whether our order was ready, the waiter ignored me and only said that it was not done yet and will call us when it's ready. But after we waited for another 20 minutes the food was still not ready so my sister came to them to asked for explanation and turned out our order was lost. It's useless if your food tastes good but your service sucks. They didn't provide any table so you just sit anywhere, which i don't have any problem with it but i'm just not gonna visit this...
