Warung Jonny in Amed, Bali, is an absolute gem that captured our hearts (and taste buds!) during our recent trip. If you're looking for an authentic and incredibly delicious Balinese culinary experience, this is the place to be. From the moment we arrived, the warm and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home.
But it was the food that truly stole the show. The grilled fish was a standout – perfectly cooked, tender, and infused with incredible local flavors. However, the real star for us was the Satay Lilit. These finely minced, spiced, and grilled skewers were bursting with flavor and had a delightful texture. They were served with a generous portion of fresh, crisp veggies and, of course, the vibrant Sambal Matah.
For those unfamiliar, Satay Lilit is a traditional Balinese type of satay, distinct from other Indonesian satays. Instead of being made from whole pieces of meat, it's crafted from minced meat (often fish, chicken, or pork) mixed with grated coconut, rich coconut milk, and a blend of aromatic spices and herbs known as basa genep. This mixture is then wrapped around lemongrass stalks or bamboo skewers and grilled, giving it a unique aroma and tender texture. Sambal Matah is a fresh, raw Balinese chili sauce that's incredibly popular. Unlike most sambals that are cooked, Sambal Matah is made from finely sliced raw ingredients like shallots, lemongrass, chili, and kaffir lime leaves, all mixed with hot coconut oil and a pinch of salt. It's known for its refreshing, zesty, and spicy kick that perfectly complements grilled dishes and seafood.
To complement the exquisite food, we thoroughly enjoyed the ice-cold Bintang beer. There's something truly special about sipping a cold beer in the warm Bali air after a day of exploring, and Warung Jonny certainly delivers on that front. It was the perfect pairing for our meal and made the experience even more enjoyable.
In summary, it's a place we wholeheartedly recommend and can't...

I am Uber fussy when it comes to cooking seafood. It must never be overcooked, or drowned in sauce that looses the delicate flavour of the flesh. And the sauce, spice, or sambal must complement the seafood and not overwhelm it.
This is truly a hidden gem in plain fsight. Yet easily overlooked & driven past for the more upbeat flashy looking restaurants in Amed.
It’s great to see Balinese cuisine stand up to any of the international fine foods on offer. The grilled mahimahi could not have been fresher.
I know this because I was on the fishing boat Johnny recommended. The fish his wife Madeprepared was delivered right off the boat! And I followed it to the warung at the top of the hill. Made’s sambal is nothing like that on offer anywhere in Legian/Kuta/Candidasa. It is sublime! Made fresh, well balanced with just a hint of heat without adding chilli sauce to it. The snake beans and grilled tuna were perfectly cooked. And I actually enjoyed the Mi Goreng. Like I said, it’s not a flash Warung, but the food is Uber good, and the hosts are humble, kind, and provide...
Read moreMy wife and I arrived by chance, walking in the direction of Lipah beach. It was a rest in every way. We were alone in the establishment, clean and spacious. Great value for the price. The food is delicious, the grilled fish are delicious, and the kindness of the owner is extraordinary. She even insisted on charging us for a bottle of water for less than its price because we didn't have small bills. Incredible.
If we like to walk it is partly because of these things... the encounters on the side of the road. These gifts.
Thank you so much.
