WHEN you're in Malang, East Java and look for the best Rawon in town, look no further. Just out of the Malang central train station and go left. A couple hundred meters on the left side of the road you will find this place.
Rawon is strong rich tasting traditional Indonesian beef black soup. Originally from Surabaya in Indonesian province of East Java, it became signature dishes of most cities in East Java.
It uses black nuts as the main seasoning which gives the strong nutty flavor and dark color to the soup.
The soup is made of ground mixture of garlic, shallot, keluak, ginger, candlenut, turmeric, red chili and salt sauteed with oil until it gets aromatic. The sauteed mixture is then poured into boiled beef stock with diced beef. Lemongrass, galangal, bay leaves, kaffir limeleaves and sugar are then added as seasonings.
The soup is usually garnished with green onion and fried shallot, and served with rice, hence the name rawon rice or Nasi Rawon in Indonesian language, together with baby bean sprouts, salted preserved egg, shrimp crackers and sambal chili sauce...

Road side small eatery that mainly offers Rawon dish. It is basically a traditional eastern Javanese beef stew served with rice. They accept cash, not sure if they accept online payment, and cards are not accepted.
Apart from Rawon, they also serve Nasi Sop, Nasi Opor Ayam, Nasi Lodeh, Nasi Pecel, and Nasi Bali with egg. For beverages, they offer Teh Botol, iced and hot tea, orange drink, and hot coffee. Along with the main dish, they serve add-on plate of fried tempe, potato fritter, and beef jerky.

Read moreMinggu, 23 Juli 2022 setelah perjalanan jauh menggunakan mobil dari Jogja jam 11 siang sampailah kami di kota Malang sekitar jam 5 sore. Kemudian mencari makan dengan pilihan rawon di deket Stasiun Malang, di jalan Embong Brantas, namanya Rawon Tessy. Kami menanyakan menu rawon kemudian terhidang pesanan kami yaitu 2 nasi rawon pisah, 1 nasi (1/2) rawon pisah, 1 nasi telur dengan minuman 3 teh manis hangat, 1 teh tawar hangat. Kami menikmati menu tsb hingga selesai. Yang bikin kaget kami membayar itu semua sebesar 204rb. Harga yang cukup mahal untuk sekelas warung makan yang bukan kelas restoran, dan juga dengan terhidang nasi yang dingin dengan toge dan sambal saja (padahal menu rawon selain toge adalah krupuk udang dan telor asin). Kami mengkonfirmasi kembali ternyata semangkok rawon dihargai 45rb dan 5rb nasi (kalo pisah), kalo campur sekitar 23rb (saya lupa apakah ini rawon saja atau dgn nasi). Perbandingan harga yang tdk signifikan antara nasi dicampur dan pisah. Saya sampai mengkonfirmasi 2x hal ini, dan penjual menunjukkan 45rb rawon itu ternyata ukurannya kalo dibungkus itu seukuran plastik eceran 2kg, sedangkan kami makan dihidang di mangkok yang dimana banyaknya tdk sama dgn yg di plastik bungkus.
Intinya adalah, harga yang diberikan tidak wajar untuk semangkok rawon dan juga nasi nya jika dipisah, dgn tdk ada menu lain selain toge dan itu pun nasinya dingin.
Kalo mahal pun tdk apa2, jika dihidangkan benar2 pantas dihargai mahal.
Oh ya, biar seimbang, untuk rasa okelah, so-so cukup enak walaupun kurang hitam kluweknya (kurang gurih), dagingnya ada yg empuk dan ada yg sedikit keras.
Saran:
Bagi pembeli, tanya dlu harganya sebelum makan. Worthy tidak antara harga dan kualitas penyajian dan rasa.
