Read moreI came here solely based on the reviews.. I thought it would be a nice place to chill out and spend the late afternoon into the evening drinking quality cocktails & snacking on amazing food till I was ready for my next massage; unfortunately that was not the case. Cocktails started at $20AUD and the 2 I tried tasted like water with lemon juice in it (both!) . I thought I’d simply switch to a wine or champagne knowing there’s no stinging on the alcohol or taste of a wine - but the cheapest glass of Prosecco was $22AUD and there was no bottle of wine under $100AUD! So beer it was! I ordered 4 dishes from the bites menu - Tuna, soft shell crab, oysters gratin & gyoza. The tuna was sitting on top of soggy mix of brown avocado, strawberries & orange with a biscuit that had absorbed all moisture from everything on top of it & was absolutely disgusting! The soft shell crab had NO flavour to it whatsoever, the gyoza (which the waiter kept insisting over & over was “very spicy and very tasty”!) was somewhat equivalent to the frozen variety you can buy at Woolworths or Coles in Australia with a bit of watered down soy sauce and spring onion over the top… & the oysters… well - why bother going to the effort of killing good seafood by baking it if you don’t know how seasoning works. For a restaurant that “specialises” in seafood, and doesn’t serve any other protein, and with a very limited selection at that -- I would have imagined that you’d have the flavours of these dishes perfected by now … or at least understand the necessity of garlic, chilli - or even just salt & pepper at a minimum in cooking these dishes! Just to give them one last try at perfecting one of their types of dishes - I tried the Strawberry tart from the sweets range and that was enough to make the decision to move onto somewhere else! No custard filling, the tart case must have been a week old and the ice cream was more ice than cream.. melting over my plate looking, and tasting, like water. Needless to say - do not recommend these dishes.. or the restaurant - unless you’re just in it...
Read moreThis refers specifically to Christmas Day brunch 2022.
I was extremely disappointed having expected much better from the W Hotel.
There was a long queue to enter partly due to the bad weather putting some of the seating out-of-bounds. Given the weather has been bad for a few days and rain was forecast, this was not unexpected. They tried to fob several groups, including ours, off with tables one level up in the entrance. Needless to say most people refused.
There was zero Christmas atmosphere - no decorations, only the occasional Christmas song being played, no table decorations, nothing for the kids.
The food selection was limited compared to the menu I had received and there was no one dish that I would say impressed me. If you are a seafood fan you would have got your money's worth but otherwise I felt it was a rip-off. The desserts are usually a highlight for me but my daughter and I agreed that they were all very lack-lustre. And I'm not sure what the Christmas pudding was as I've never come across that in any country.
One bright spot was, having waited 20 mins for our first drink and the plates running out for a while, the service was very good. The staff were all professional, friendly and doing their best.
I won't let this spoil my Christmas but I wish I had just spent half the amount of money to go to the restaurant...
