One of old time favourite lunpia Semarang. Some say it was brought since 1807 from Fu Kien to Semarang by this guy named Tjoa Thay Joe.
And so on and so in and so on, until this shop owned by one of the generation inherit its "Mataram" brand.
I tried the lunpia basah, I called it pure and virgin lunpia. Very tasty with the rught mixture of sweetness, umami and crunchy turnip. Very light.
That made me try the second one: fried lunpia.
Well it is like the unfried one, but with crispy lunpia skin. The rest remain similar. Of course this one is more greasy - naturally.
Both was served with slimy lunpia sauce, pickled cucumber and Chili. One of kind taste once all combined. The chili looked innocent, but it was all lie! It was hot like hell.
The place is a bit small and warm, no air-con. Drinks: bottled soft drinks. Maybe because most of its customers buy take away.

Setelah sebelumnya sedikit kecewa karena kehabisan Lunpia Gang Lombok (yg saya kira the one only lunpia otentik Semarang), lalu saya tanya ke pak parkir Gang Lombok, lunpia mana lagi yg spesial di semarang ini? Kemudian pak parkir menyarankan saya untuk ke Lunpia Mataram, yg gk kalah legend katanya dari Lunpia Gang Lombok. Ternyata benar aja kata pak parkir klo lunpia ini salah satu yg otentik, karena waktu di sini kita dikasih lihat silsilah pengrajin lunpia khas Semarangan dari generasi awal sampai generasi sekarang, dan Lunpia Mataram ini jadi salah satu penerus warisan dinasti lunpia Tjoa-Wasi khas Semarangan.
Lunpia di sini tersedia varian basah dan goreng, dan baru dibuat waktu kita pesan. Untuk rasanya, Lunpia Semarang menurut saya sedikit berbeda dari lumpia yg sering saya makan di Surabaya. Isiannya gk cuma rebung, tapi juga ada telurnya, trs sedikit kecewa sih karena saya gk nemu/merasakan udang di isiannya, cuma ada sedikit aromanya, pdhl katanya udang ini salah satu khasnya isian lunpia semarang 😔. Lalu untuk saosnya bukan pakai tauco seperti yg ada di Surabaya, tapi pakai saos bawang kental dengan rasa manis gula merah (maybe?). Dan di sini juga ada acarnya.
Untuk harga termasuk mahal, tapi wajar lah karena kuliner yg satu ini termasuk legend dan sudah punya nama.

Read more2 lumpia variants are available here: fried and fresh (not fried). I only managed to try the fried one. It was good, crispy, and fresh. Sometimes bamboo shoot can taste a little bit sour and smells bad, but here at Lunpia Mataram, that is not the case. The bamboo shoot tastes fresh and has a good bite. My only problem with this place is that the lunpia is a bit too sweet, and it would be great of it has some porky goodness. But...
