Dinner here ended up costing us: a trip to Bali hospital 2 x-rays cutting our holiday on Gili short a whole lot of stress over 3 million INR in medical fees, extra accomodation needed etc
At the end of our meal, my partner pulled a piece of metal out of her mouth - possibly part of a metal staple.
Worried that the unexpectedly crunchy food she had just earlier swallowed, was more metal in our food, we left Gili to go back to Bali as there are no x-ray facilities on this island.
It was such a horrible experience as we were thoroughly enjoying our holiday up until that point.
We should expect all humans to make mistakes, so there should be adequate systems to ensure that these mistakes don’t result in exposing customers to harm. Issues like staplers being used and stored above food preparation areas should be picked up in food safety inspections by management, which I’d bet my house on, aren’t taking places as often as they need to, or to a sufficient standard. This is the unfortunate reality of eating at cheap places with (likely) poor assurance practices around food safety, where they don’t allocate resourcing to adequate food safety practices as they struggle to afford it.
If this had happened back home, this restaurant would be shut down for at least a day and I’m sure an investigation would uncover many more issues.
I’m sad to write a bad review about a vegan restaurant, but this was such a horrible experience and there needs to be accountability when poor management results in exposing us to hazards, us losing the rest of our holiday and a trip to the hospital.
To finish on a positive note, the staff were very friendly prior to and after the event. They were also extremely helpful in connecting me with a doctor over the phone to find out where the closest x-ray facilities and hospital are. I was very...

The rainbow toast is incredible - it is beautiful but has so many epic flavors and things going on. The best toast ever!
The sweet potato curry was probably one of the best curries I've had - EVER. Not just this year, or in Indonesia... ever. It is packed with spices and veggies and is so perfectly balanced.
The tofu scrambled eggs have some sort of combo of tofu and mushroom and a creamy cheesy spicy flavor. They are delicious and I would suggest adding the spicy sambal to the order - it sends them over the top. The bread that is served with them is nice and thick and is a good combo with the eggs.
The apple caramel smoothie bowl is decadent and sweet and creamy and filling and delicious.
The cinnamon roll is gluten free (which I am not but it was great). It was dense but nice and sweet and cinnamon-y and wonderful.
The tofu poke bowl had so much in it - a nice sour cream to balance out the zesty salad and the fried tofu was still soft but had a nice crunch to it.
Wow. Juju is truly an incredible cafe. The waiters and waitresses are very nice here also. And check out their shop! They sell a lot of fun zero waste things. You can even refill your shampoo/conditioner/lotion...

The smoothie bowl I had was easily one of the best I've ever tasted—fresh, vibrant, and bursting with flavor. My wife was equally thrilled with the pesto pasta, which was perfectly creamy and full of rich, herbal notes.
The tempeh nuggets, which were a special on the menu, were an absolute hit—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with incredible flavor. And let's not forget the juices! Freshly made and incredibly refreshing, they were the perfect complement to our meal.
