This year, my partner and I decided to return to Ruby's Cafe, as we had fond memories from our visit about seven years ago. Two weeks ago, we ordered the pumpkin curry, which was incredibly tasty and full of flavor. Based on that experience, we returned today to enjoy the same dish, along with the beef rendang, which had received great reviews. Unfortunately, our experience today was the complete opposite. The pumpkin curry was the worst curry we’ve ever had—by far. The pumpkin was undercooked, the chickpeas were hard, and it contained some odd spices that gave it a strange, almost revolting taste. It bore absolutely no resemblance to the delicious curry we remembered. When I shared my feedback with the waiter, she just took the dish away without addressing the issue or even acknowledging my concerns. Whether she didn’t understand or simply didn’t care, it felt very unprofessional. The rendang was also disappointing. The beef was tough and chewy, and the sauce was overly sweet—easily the worst rendang we’ve had in Indonesia. It felt as though a random person had been thrown into the kitchen with no idea what they were doing. I’m baffled by how a restaurant can deliver such drastically different experiences within just two weeks. The menu remains the same as I remember from years ago, so this inconsistency in quality is perplexing. I’ve given three stars instead of one because I want to be fair and acknowledge the times we’ve enjoyed great meals here in the past. However, after today’s experience, we won’t...

I'll be honest after a load of research and reading between the lines if you want great quality dishes, large portions, friendly service, ability to purchase beers and wine with your meal in a clean environment then I wouldn't recommend anywhere else.
We loved it so much we ate here 3 evenings out of our 4 evenings on the island. One evening we took some friends along with us who had eaten elsewhere on the island and agreed with us that the food was fantastic.
The beef rendang is to die for, my husband was even buying the beef rendang pie from their pie shop during the day to get a fix of their rendang recipe.
We also tried chicken bhutu, green Thai curry and noddle dish with prawns. The stand out dishes were the chicken dishes and of course the rendang. Saw the kofta going out to a table next to us which also looked great.
Starter wise, curry puffs and the fresh spring rolls are wonderful plus the crispy spring rolls. Our friends enjoyed the jalapeño mozzarella balls.
Honestly, if you are in doubt where to go for great flavours then...
Read moreMy fiance and I went to Ruby's twice on our 3 day stay on Gili Air. The first time we went we had curry and the falafel wrap which were both amazing. We wanted to try a bunch of appies too but we knew we couldn't eat all that food. So we came back today and ordered 3 appies hahhaha. We had the chicken spring rolls, potato croquettes, and jalepeño poppers. All 3 were AMAAAAAAAAZING, each one better than the next!! Portions are great too, i was full after our appies! Our server was so delightful and nice and treated us like family. They are so accomodating just like the sign says, if you want anything spicier just ask! All of our food was perfectly spiced and I'll be dreaming about those jalepeño poppers for years to come. Also keep in mind that all food is made fresh to order, and you're on a tropical island so sit back with your drink and relax while you wait for your delicious food and stop complaining! 10 out of 10 for this place, dont miss it....you...
