Don’t think I’ve very left a bad review in my life but had a horrible experience here a week ago which hasn’t left my mind since . I braught my 18 year old nephew and 8 year old son to all Ireland semi final last weekend . We called in here for some refreshments as it wasn’t as packed as other places nearer croke park . Plenty of seats available when we walked . Bar staff clearly saw us walk in and happily served us i got a Fanta for my son and bag of crisps . He was sitting down quietly having them and I went to the toilet and when i returned they were very upset because a different member of staff came over to them and told them to leave that kids aren’t allowed. This is not the sort of thing you say to an 8 year old boy who was sitting there quietly having his drink and crisps on what was a scorcher of a day and had walked for ages and was just happy to be sitting down for a rest having a cold drink . No where did it say on enterting kids weren’t allowed if so we wouldn’t have went in and it was was 1.30pm in the day generally kids are allowed in to pubs once accompanied by an adult . My son was traumatised by this , an adult coming over telling him to leave . He’s a very quiet young boy at the best of times but since several times he said to me he taught the man was going to put him out on the street and he wouldn’t see me again and be lost on his own . If this so called human being had a heart or any gumption he would have waited till i got back from the toilet and quietly said it to me if he didn’t want him there and we would have left . I just don’t get it we were sitting there quietly and the pub wasn’t even that busy . We don’t have a habbit of going to pubs nor I don’t usually bring my son into a pub but the day that was in it was an exception he had travelled to cheer on his county in the all Ireland semi final and we had walked a lot on a hot day and just stopped off to give his legs and break and have some refreshments and this put a whole dampener on the day and he hasn’t even been himself since . Anyone that’s a parent will know how sensitive kids at that age can be and as a grown man you don’t go over and say that to a child especially when he was sitting there quietly and behaving himself . Obviously not a parent himself . Will definitely never go next or...

Truly marvelous place near the Glasnevin cemetery. We went to visit the cemetary and we spotted this little restaurant on the map. The comments were really great so we decided to give it a try. We were'nt disappointed since it seems to be a true authentic Irish pub/restaurant. The atmosphere is incredible. Nothing fancy in here; just the feeling to be at the best place to drink a beer and eat good Irish food with friends and family.

We took the coddle since people were saying it is the best in Dublin. It was really good. The stock was light and tasty and the dish was really meaty. Very generous and made with love. We also took the baked Parm ham with smoked cheese and tomato sauce. It's not traditional, clearly, but it's a really good tapas, served with nice grilled bread. We also tried the Irish spring rolls. I didn't knew it was a thing but it's apparently potatoes cabbage and meat inside a brick. It was tasty, really different from a traditional spring roll. Don't be fooled by the photography; they were huge. You can dip them in a sauce made with mustard I guess.

For the dessert we tried the apple pie (or was it an apple tart?) which I did not like a lot since the apples were not really sweet and the pastry was not crispy, but my boyfriend liked it a lot. He said that it was close to some greek desserts with filo pastry. It came with a great quantity of custard cream but somehow he managed to drink it all since it was so good. I ate instead a rhubarb crumble which was really good. The fruit was pleasantly sour and the crumble was crispy and sweet. It was really yummy and it was perfect with the cream. It wasn't fancy deserts but it was homemade and like the ones your grandma would make to you. Truly a magical moment.

The Guinness was also great and what can I say about the staff... Everyone was really nice and smiling, and our waitress was the best you can have. She was sweet, she provided advice about the dishes, she was running from a table to another with great ease.

It's also cheaper that in most of the places we went (8-10€ each dish, 6€ the pinte if I remember correctly).

The Gravedigger is a true gem and I was so frustrated because it was at 1hour from our hostel. Otherwise, we would have been there every lunch and every night. Thank you for everything, you...

A group of us went for food with our colleague who was leaving our job. He had been talking for months about going here and we decided that after our dinner we would all walk down here for what was supposed to be the best pint of Guinness in Dublin. I had with me 2 slices of pizza in a box left from my meal. As I walked in, the bar was so nice and warm and seemed busy. The barman seen me and told me I had to leave the pizza outside. Apparently it was gonna smell the whole pub out. I tried to explain it was cold and I wasn't going to eat it but I was told very plainly and rudely that the pizza couldn't come in. I understand that bringing outside food into a premises is a no no but there was no alternative offered such as keeping it behind the bar or something for me while I had a pint with my colleague. In anyways I decided that I wasn't going to leave my pizza outside. I said goodbye to my group and I left without having a drink there. I won't go back again. This level of customer service is from a time long gone. Anyway that's my honest opinion of the experience I had here.

In reply to their reply...

It was freezing cold outside I wasn't going to to sit out there. Not even sure there was any seats outside. And also your member of staff didn't offer this option to me. He was frankly rude which is why you got 1 star. I'd love to give you zero stars in fact. Like I said I wasn't going to eat the 2 slices of cold pizza in the bar, this wasn't my intention. Take on board my feedback if you want. Or ignore it if you want. It's no skin off my nose. I'm only one person. Not gonna make a difference to your business. I won't be back. Plenty of places that have a more...

Service was great, everyone was kind. The coddle was good, a bit salty and could have used more potatoes or something. The little sausage things were only okay but the rest of the meat was flavourful. Doesn't have many beer/drinks options. I was pleased with the meal... But then came dessert. This apple pie/tarte was sad. What happened? What filling it had was mushy and flavorless. There seemed to be no seasoning, no cinnamon even... The fruit on the side was the best part. Even the ice cream was kind of plain tasting. Idk if it's meant to be a struggle time recipe or what, but it could do with a revamp. [I'd like to add here a discussion on what makes an apple pie or tart "Irish". The idea that spices like cinnamon are not part of Irish food is rather confusing to me as spices such as cinnamon, mace, aniseed, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, saffron and rosewater have been imported into Ireland since the mid 1500s, a few decades before the POTATO arrived on the island. I know my history, and clearly remember the story of the bishop that held a merchant (and his ship) from Antwerp, in West Cork for a bounty of several hundreds of pounds of spices, including 200lbs of cinnamon and this was in the late 1500s. So, you absolutely can add cinnamon or other spices to an apple tart and it would still be Irish. Again, if this tart is meant to be from an era where butter, spices, sugar and flavour were scare, they aye, it is VERY authentic] Nice place, skip the apple pie. (My visit was May 2022) Edit: Owner was kind enough to reply and confirm my observations and provide excuses. Always a good sign! Cheers.

Finally got to have a pint of Guinness in the Gravediggers as it is often cited that they have the best pint of the dark stuff this side of Dublin. As it was a Friday and there were two Dublin football derbies on, a lot of people were out and about, so it was a little difficult to get served as the pub was well busy. But I found a place easily enough beside the entrance, and got myself a nice pint of Guinness, and it was nice, delicious even..... Got into a nice chat with some locals and that was that. But on my way back from one of the games, I decided since I don't often come to this side of the world, why not venture in for a few more pints before bedtime. Result was more lovely pints, and more good conversations with locals. Good pints and good banter, isn't that what a true Irish pub is basically all about? Service was fine, atmosphere was good, and Yes the pints are what the people have said - GREAT! Just about got my plane early the next morning!!! Ha Recommended.
