This is a hard review. Some aspects were really good and some were bad. Ultimately its about the overall experience. So this review is based on that. The food was really good. Can not fault them at all about the food. It was tasty well presented. They would of scored close to a 5 on food. The service on the other hand was far from good. The waiter was extremely slow and eventually got replaced after dropping a drink on a person in our group. And spent about 15min cleaning up the glass and the mess. Accidents happen so there were no hard feelings about that. The Starters came out eventually which was slow. The kids meals did not arrive with the starters so our kids were hungry and complaining. We had to flag down a waiter and ask them to try and bring the kids food. Mains eventually arrived after the starters. Which was about 1hr20 min after us arriving. At about 1hr45 of us arriving I assume it was a manager approached the table to remind us that we only have a 2hr slot and need to leave the restaurant soon. The waiters had not even removed our mains plates from the table yet. We had flagged a waiter to ask for deserts menu's just prior to the manger arriving. But after the experience with the manager it was the turning point in our experience. Dont get me wrong people in our group work in the hospitality industry as well, and were not happy how the situation was handled. It was their waiter that dropped the drink and had to clean up the mess. and the service that was slow. All the factors combined and then a manager asking us to leave in soon because they need the table for another booking as Ultimately the reason for the low review. We are not tourists to the town and would be repeat customers, as we are to the other Quinlan's restaurant/ takeaway in tralee and Killarney. But not sure if we will return to the Mad monk after...

Dropped in without a booking in the early evening, mid week.

Firstly I'd say the atmosphere scoring is because I was sat in between two tables of extremely loud tourists. There were several empty tables, but I understand that these could have been reserved for bookings shortly after my visit.

Ordered the Squid (starter), gambas (starer), chips and a glass of Alberinio.

The squid was tasty and cooked well. The salad that came with it was bland and sad.

The gambas were tiny, maybe five prawns. They were overcooked, came sitting in far too much oil and the bread with it was stale.

The chips were cooked well, but were lacking in salt.

The alberinio was nice and served at the correct temp.

Service was friendly, but a bit disjointed. Had to wait a while to order the bill and then pay the bill, please bring a card machine with the bill. Tbf there were two or three tables of tourists who appeared a bit demanding and needy, but maybe allow your bar person to collect payments when they're not busy, as was the case and they made eye contact with me numerous times while I was waiting to get the bill and then pay the bill.

All in all, it was a bit meh for the price. I'd recommend to get their fried squid from their takeaway and save yourself a few quid, less hassle and far less loud and entitled and...

We had booked a table on a Saturday night and were so looking forward to the meal based on eating there before and the menu. On arrival we waited for nearly 20 minutes to get acknowledged or even get a drink! Then when I asked about no garlic in the mussels they said no as the sauce is pre made! Over never been anywhere they don’t cook that fresh. Then I had crab claws to start all served in butter so I asked for no garlic… well it was hard to get the crab meat off the bone and all I could taste was butter! It wasn’t until my friend had them as a main we realised they must be heated up in the butter as a third of hers were cold yet cooked! My main was The Hake special and it was the smallest portion ever and when I got to complain after waiting excessively for our second drink, our waiter said that’s not our fault they come from the factory in 180-200g sizes. This is so unacceptable and he did nothing about our complaints so I didn’t leave a tip and I always tip a lot. So so disappointing and rarely complain but this was...

We ended up on this place becuase the original restaurant was packed. The wait staff was very professional and friendly. I was kindly brought a taste of a similar wine after they had run out of the one I ordered. We shared the crab dip, fried squid, and fish and chips. The crab dip was good, hot and was topped with tomato and Avocado chopped up. The squid was also very good, but the portion was very small, even for an appetizer. I think there was more salad then squid. It took a turn with the fish and chips. Portion side was good, but it was lacking seasoning and the chips were a bit stale. The skin of the fish had also been left on, creating a slightly slimy texture between the fish meat and the skin/battering. Overall, I rate this place a 3, but service helped give it the 4. Satisfied our hunger, but left us feeling 'meh'.

Killarney restaurant. Totally not what I expected. No background music. No coasters. Big spoon given for dessert which was homemade lemon tart. The base of the tart was rock hard, had to use all force the break of a small piece. Gave up and only ate the topping which was mediocre. Ordered the Hake for the main which was not fresh and flaky like the ones I get from Tesco. Sauce was a mixture of old left over fish and big red beans. No wet wipes for sticky fingers. Appears that foreigners get stuffed upstairs and Irish at the bottom. As I noticed, Philippines, Americans and my foreign family upstairs but no foreigners downstairs. Americans was so loud could not even hear my daughter next to me. Only thing I can rave about is the calamari salad. For the price tag I think they can do sooo much better.

My boyfriend and I visited The Mad Monk during our stay in Killarney. It was a lovely dinner. For starters, we shared the seared scallops. The sauce was creamy and flavorful, and the scallops were well caramelized. For our mains, I got the prawns. They were pretty fresh but a bit oily to me. My boyfriend ordered the salmon, which was perfectly cooked. The sides were all delicious—the potato beneath the salmon had a nice sweetness with a hint of herbs. For dessert, we had the warm crumble of the day, which was a raspberry crumble with vanilla ice cream. We loved it! It was tangy and flavorful, with just the right amount of sweetness. Our server for the night was also very nice and friendly. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and highly recommend.
