As someone who grew up in Asia, I’ll admit—I usually approach “Asian” restaurants abroad with cautious optimism (and a fair bit of skepticism). Too often, the flavors just don’t land the way I remember. So when I went to get takeout at Thailandi on Jaffa Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was in for.

I started with the eggrolls, and they were a delight. Not only was the wrapper perfectly golden and crunchy, but the vegetables inside added their own fresh, crisp bite—a double crunch that made them impossible to stop eating.

For the main, I ordered their Pad Thai. To my surprise, it was wonderful. Was it exactly like the Pad Thai from the bustling streets of Bangkok? Not quite—especially since I skipped the peanuts, which usually bring that extra layer of flavor. But what arrived at my table carried a familiar warmth, reminding me more of the Indonesian-style Chinese dish, Kwetiau, with its sweet-savory balance.

Thailandi is a place I go back to every time I want delicious warm food. Their incredible chef cooks you up flavours that will leave you shocked every time anew!
