SPAN Pizzeria — Restaurant in Bologna

5 stars? Scrolling through at first you may wonder...why 5 stars? Has this person had Italian food? Is this just a rave about one simple thing they experienced? The answer simply is no...SPAN Pizzeria sets a very high bar for food and service that is unmatched in many 4 and 5 stars restaurants I have been to.

We came in because this was restaurant recommended for the Neapolitan pizza. To be fair, we arrived prior to the 7pm opening and wanders Bologna for a few hours (finding some cool spots along the way). We came in at just about 7 and had no issue with our pick of seating. The menus are in Italian (as expected and nothing too difficult to translate or speak with the fantastic staff about).

We decided to pick a Caprese for a starter and asked for a recommendation on a bottle of wine. We decided to go with the recommended wine selection of Sangiovese Superiore, a wonderful southern italian red wine for a reasonable 15 euro. The experience of receiving and tasting the wine was as you would hope for in a high class establishment and added to the atmosphere of the dining experience. We ended up splitting a delicious calzone between the two of us which was fantastic. The quality of the calzone was exquisite from the cheese and meat, to the perfect sauce, and light basting of olive oil around the crust. It is an experience to savor and truly wonderful after enjoying a delicious caprese.

As the night wound down, we ordered a Baba for dessert. If you're not familiar with a baba, it is a pound or sponge cake that is soaked in rum with a delicious cream on top. Perfect for two people to split (to be fair we split it all, including the bottle of wine) but savory and satisfying.

It's absolutely worth mentioning from the time we sat down to the time we paid our bill, the staff was nothing short of extremely professional and attentive. You could catch them constantly checking to see if you needed anything or preparing to clear your table when a course was complete. The staff was phenomenal.

If you're in Bologna, even if you have to walk( this was 1.6km from our hotel) take the time to check it out. You won't regret it and will walk away satisfied with the food, service, and complete...

Dopo varie segnalazioni e dopo aver visto le foto, ero curioso anche io di assaggiare la pizza dei Pizzaioli Anonimi. Il locale, che si trova poco oltre i viali, mi ha fatto una buona impressione: luminoso, moderno e accogliente; controlli COVID a posto, come il distanziamento tra i tavoli. Il personale ci ha accolto in modo garbato e si è mostrato disponibile e attento. Il menù è ovviamente mono tematico: Pizza! C'è la possibilità di iniziare con degli antipasti e noi abbiamo optato per: pizza fritta, che è risultata molto soffice e gradevole al sapore, anche se a mio avviso non tutti i condimenti erano adeguati; non mi è piaciuto quello con la mortadella (sbilanciato, il grasso del salume sul frutto della pizza), "normale" il classico pomodoro e mozzarella, mi è invece piaciuto quello con il pesto di cipolla / melanzana. Il difetto delle montanarine è l'eccessiva quantità di olio che è rimasta nel piatto, son risultate eccessivamente unte; l'olio dovrebbe restare nella pentola e non nel cibo! Poi i tortini: più riuscito per me quello patate e pane; "normale" la parmigiana di melanzane; mi ha lasciato invece più perplesso quello con la scarola, che ho trovato eccessivamente tosto e non molto compatto. Le pizze. La carta propone numerose opzioni, alcune più classiche e altre più originali, ma con alla base di fatto gli stessi ingredienti: pomodori, formaggi, qualche verdura o volendo anche mortadella o altri affettati, nulla di "rivoluzionario" per sfortuna o fortuna... Il formato è quello classico napoletano, con un bel cornicione e morbido nella consistenza. Abbiamo preso quella ai 4 formaggi di bufala, ma la cottura non era completa (magari una svista?); l'abbinamento dei vari formaggi non mi ha convinto, non l'ho trovato equilibrato e non valorizzava a dovere la materia prima secondo me. L'altra pizza era con burrata, zucchini saltati e speck croccante; la cottura era adeguata, sapore ed abbinamento degli ingredienti nell'insieme meno, per i miei gusti. Per dessert siamo nella più classica delle tradizioni: abbiamo preso una fetta di pastiera, onesta, ben fatta e un babà con della panna di ricotta, che ho trovato molto ben fatto e molto buono, pur nella sua semplicità. Potenzialmente una buona pizzeria, ma l'esperienza che ho avuto, non mi ha convinto del tutto ed è un peccato ché sono convinto le potenzialità ci potrebbero essere tutte; non so se ci tornerò un'altra volta, considerando la fama che lo circonda e anche la cifra spesa (ca 60 euro 2 antipasti, 2 pizze, 2 dolci, 1 acqua, 1 birra e 1 caffè), mi sarei aspettato un pasto...

Seeing ratings and recommendations me and my bf decided to go there to eat an Italian pizza.

We wanted to eat inside, but the local was full so we decided to take it out. Time waiting: 30 min. When we came back to take the pizza, the local was almost empty and we asked about eating inside. The stuff told us is fully booked. Weird, but ok.

The only positive thing was the taste of pizza - it was good, the ingredients are fresh. But pizza wasn't cut, and I had to deal with it, which was a nightmare. Impossible to eat with hands, even eating it with a fork and a knife was like a challenge. Ingredients just fell down (it's seen in the photo). Boxes are terrible, pizza was cold after 5 min.

Summarizing: if you don't have time to look for other locals, it won't be a bad choice, but it is...
