Ristorante San Michele — Restaurant in Catania

After an amazing morning on Mt Etna we were famished and stoped at San Michele for lunch. We arrived just after 13:00 …. After they sat us, three other parties arrived ….. and after over an hour and the other tables were served …. Not us. (Maybe because we were American or not)

The waiter kept saying 5 more minutes ….. 2 more minutes …. But over 2 hours later we got half of our meals …. And it was NOT worth the wait: Pasta Norma …. A Sicily special, the pasta was definitely not home made as advertised. The pictures we saw online did not resemble our food. On the bright side the fried chicken special was actually good. We ordered meatballs that only arrived as we were finishing and we declined.

I know you are saying - this is Italy, relax … BUT … We inquired after 90 minutes and the waiter told us that the normal chef was sick and they had a replacement, which would have been helpful to know up front —- if they has been honest about the wait time, we would have been more understanding.

They offered us nothing for the troubles and finally after almost 3 hours we got up, estimated our bill and left.

It has honestly been the WORST experience we have...

(Nota: il racconto è abbastanza grande, quindi se non volete leggerlo cercherò ad aggiungere delle sintesi alla fine)

Sono venuto a Catania per un paio di giorni e insieme con le viste bellissime volevo anche trovare un bel posto per la cena.

Le mie criteri sono pochi: Cibo Siciliano Poca gente Prezzi raggiungibili

L'ho trovato! 3 sicuramente non è una fortuna, era proprio il destino. Ed ecco perché:

Dopo 4 ore di camminata per la città, mi sono fermato vicino a una fontana per riposare per un attimo. Riposando ho notato il cartello con la scritta "San Michele" (ristorante). Ma non ho visto nessuno né ad uscire da lì né ad entrare lì.

La curiosità mi ha convinto di andare lì dentro. Dentro suonava lu musica ambientale. Mi ha incontrato signora Stefania e abbiamo iniziato a parlare.

Per dire la verità non sono una persona molto sociale se possiamo dire così. Ma ho parlato con Stefania con gran piacere.

Nonostante la nostra discussione principale intorno ai piatti, passo a passo abbiamo iniziato a parlare di tutto. Mi sentivo come a casa :)

Ovvio che qua c'è un po' di fortuna ad essere primo e senza fretta. Perché dopo 20-25 minuti altre persone hanno iniziato a venire. (Non saprei dire se sono colpevole di questo 😅)

Va vene, torniamo alla parte principale del qualsiasi ristorante - cibo.

Non sapevo cosa scegliere, quindi signora Stefania mi ha proposto 2 piatti, cucinati da chef stesso:

1. Pasta con le alici

2. Polpette siciliani

3. Vivendo in Italia già da più di 8 anni ho imparato come cucinare la pasta e per quello MAI prima la ordinavo dai ristoranti... Ma credetemi quando vi dico che era la pasta buonissima. Una pasta con qualità di grano alto E molto importante - preparata al dente nel modo perfetto. Se ci sono diversi livelli per la preparazione della pasta al dente - questa sarebbe il primo livello.

4. Le polpette con le patate fresche è secondo piato che ho provato in questo posto. Mi è piaciuto tutto, ma per dire onestamente - non sono riuscito a finire il piatto perché per la mia sorpresa il primo piatto era soddisfacente e davvero non potevo aspettarlo. Ma e qua non è tutto - mi dispiacerebbe buttarli via, e prima che ho chiesto, Stefania me lo ha proposto prima. Ha visto che non riuscivo a finirlo e mi ha chiesto se io volessi un contenitore per poter portalo a casa e finirlo dopo. Ed alla fine ho fatto proprio questo.

È un ristorante migliore dove ho mangiato da tanto tempo.

Le sintesi:

Atmosfera - 5 stelle (se potessi mettere di piu - l'avrei fatto). Ho trovato quello che cercavo e anche di più. Service - 5 stelle. Aggiungo al mio racconto che è molto raro vedere i posti quali mettono la qualità e soddisfazione del cliente prima dei soldi. Ee eccolo qua! Food - 5 stelle ovvio. Già dal mio racconto sui piatti questo si può capire. Aggiungo solo che sono fatti con l'amore. L'unica pecca è che sono troppo soddisfacenti e quindi non puoi mangiare tanti piatti diversi. Quindi io sicuramente vorrei venire lì un altra volta.

Come il bonus: Il posto è ben pulito e ben coperto.

We were hopeful when we first got to the restaurant as the atmosphere was decent, not crowded, and the waiter was friendly. Initially, we ordered wine and bruschetta, which was basically toasted bread with a sliced grape tomato on it. We had to ask for olive oil, salt and pepper to make it somewhat palatable. We ordered lunch, and after waiting over an hour, the waiter finally told us that the normal chef was not there. In the end, we waited over 2 hours for pasta al norma, which tasted and looked like canned chef boy-r-d, some mystery dish (possibly chicken), as well as chicken wings, which were tasty. Of note, while we were waiting, several other patrons who had come into the restaurant after us were served and had left. We have had so much good food while in Sicily that this poor excuse for a restaurant will not deter us; however, it would have been so much better customer service if the waiter had told us initially that the chef was out and the wait may...
