Host ruined our first night in Italy.
As a small business owner, I struggled mentally with the thought of leaving a 1 star. But you ruined our first night in Italy, and fully deserve it.
Host called me a Baby and ruined our dinner because he was too lazy to get another straw.
My fiancée and I are in Italy to get married, we went on a night stroll and found this restaurant which seemed quaint and nice.
The hosts at first seemed gracious and kind as well.
When we went to order, we were planning on each ordering a $12 pasta dish, and my fiancée wanted a white wine.
The host said no, don’t get the wine I’ll bring you both this drink, and we’ll start with a pasta then a fish.
We foolishly accepted and trusted his judgment.
What was going to be a $30 dinner ended up being an over $100 dinner when the bill was due.
He served us the specialty drinks, (which were actually quite nice when mixed) with a straw. My fiancée ordered a second round, and I waited patiently until they brought new cutlery to ask for straws since our first ones had them and the second ones didn’t.
The host called me a Baby for asking for a straw, when it was HIM who gave me one in the first place. Not once mine you, but multiple times and leaned down to my fiancé, and said he’s a baby. I thought it was a joke. But then he said, no no straw and didn’t bring one. She wanted a straw too, I just asked first.
Really acted like a total jerk for no reason and ruined our first night in Italy.
This guy needs to grow up, learn how to be a reasonable host and he should stop being a baby when he’s asked for a...
Read moreWhile I could elaborate extensively on the exceptional quality of the dishes, including their freshness, visual appeal, and authentic flavors, I would prefer to highlight the warmth and friendliness of the entire staff. They transformed our meal into an unforgettable occasion. After a 23-hour journey, finding a suitable dinner destination in a city brimming with culinary options can be a daunting task.
As we passed by the restaurant, we noticed the menu displayed outside. A cheerful Giuseppe, a skilled host with a genuine connection with customers, greeted us. We engaged in an enjoyable conversation in three different languages about the diversity of our cultures, and other staff members joined in, enhancing our dining experience even before we made a decision about continuing our walk to another restaurant.
The exceptional level of care and palpable desire to create a memorable impression of Catania were truly remarkable. As a retired senior executive with high expectations, I can attest that only at home, surrounded by family and friends, have I experienced such a profound sense of welcome attention.
Having dined in numerous cities globally, I can confidently recommend Catania’s Trattoria Giglio Rosso for an unforgettable dining experience where the primary objective is to create cherished memories with...
Read moreThe food was good, but the bill of 90€ for two people in a place that seemed to be so inexpensive left us with a bitter taste. We had an assortment of Sicilian antipasti, a simple but tasty pasta, a fresh fish with the same sauce as the pasta, a fairly inexpensive bottle of local wine and dessert liquors, all of which was tasty and inexpensive, except for the fish, which, although good, cost us 46€ all by itself. The waiter, who either did not speak English or simply chose not to, failed to mention the price of the fish when we were ordering. This would be an OK price in Central or Northern Europe, but when most of the seafood dishes on the restaurant's menu cost less than 15€, I feel that the triple price is not very fair. Also the round price of exactly 90€ makes it seem like the price of the fish was chosen arbitrarily with the expectation that tourists like us would pay without a fuss, which we of course did. I would still recommend Giglio Rosso, just as long as you either stick to items on the menu (against the wishes of the waiter) or ask for prices before ordering. Their foods have an authentic Sicilian flavour, and I feel like the way they scam tourists is very much authentically...
