Ristorante Belvedere — Restaurant in Monterosso al Mare

We ate here for dinner based on a friendly local recommendation. It was late and crowded with a unequal ratio of wait staff to customers. This is not uncommon in Italy, so we patiently awaited service. In the meantime, two ladies stopped a waitress in the street and asked for a table. She gave them the one next to ours and started serving them drinks. She then realized that we were already waiting and took our order as well. The point is by the end of the evening she was inattentive, the food was bland, and she confused our bills with the ladies next to us. She gave us their itemized bill instead of ourselves. No problem but when we asked for an itemized bill too she got angry and started cursing in Italian. She was impatient and impolite and should be ashamed of herself. We left feeling as if she only served us because she had to and that it was a great imposition to do so. I initially saw all the 1 star reviews and didn't want to try this place, but then my wife said a local person recommended this place. What the heck, how bad can it be?

Huge mistake.

First, it's packed and the servers are all stressed out. Our table was not even properly setup. It's missing 2 sets of utensils and has no cups for water.

We were trying to be considerate of the clearly overwhelmed servers, so we sat and waited patiently for them to come when ready. Bad idea. 10 mins later, nobody even looks at us. Didn't even get a menu.

When we finally flagged down a server, she was frustrated and treated us as annoyances. (Also failed to bring us the 2 missing set of utensils. She brought 1 set and when I told her we need 1 more set she grumbled "I'm just trying to help you" and walked away).

Food was just plain bad. Our "medium rare" steak is low quality cut and way overcooked. The mussels are tiny and prawns are so unfresh the meat is mushy.

0 Stars! HORRIBLE SERVICE! For some reason we were discriminated on. We were seated at the same time another American couple was. They were waited on and served all their drinks and several courses before we had a drink served. We were polite and tried to speak Italian and thanked her but 45 minutes of waiting while she glared at us as she walked by multiple times, Tried to get her attention to get out drinks and she literally glared and walked by. The couple next to us that was seated when we were ordered a second dish and got it as we stood up and left. I get Italian restaurant time. We were not rude or demanding. But this was extreme and unacceptable. We were recommended here by our hotel.
