Il Gelato Mennella — Restaurant in Naples

When I eat out in Barcelona, I generally prefer a gelato 🍨 at an ice cream parlor to a dessert at the restaurant I'm eating at. So Imagine how I feel when I'm in Italy 🇮🇹 ! 🤩 Well, it's not that I think that gelato in Italy 🇮🇹 is better than the one I can find in Barcelona, but Italy still is the country of gelato. So after our first dinner in Napoli 🇮🇹, we of course went to have gelato on our way back to our apartment. The parlor we chose is Mennella, on Corso Umberto I. Mennella is actually a chain 😞, but I didn't know that at the time. The place was empty and they had very few flavors left, unfortunately, as it was quite late... which can also explain why the clerks were so moody: they barely talked, never smiled and didn't want to give us spoons because we ordered cones... 🙄 I really felt like we were bothering them. 😤 The texture of the cream was great and it didn't melt too fast. The cream was not too sweet and all the flavors I tried (crema Mannelle which is peanut & almond, and nocciola & chocolate) were very good... All but... pistachio. 😱 That pistachio gelato probably was the worst, or one of the worst, I've ever had. It simply didn't taste like pistachio. 👎 The price was the best part as, in Italy 🇮🇹, gelato is cheap. We paid €2.8 for a "small" 2-flavor cone, which was already quite big. 👍

This place is getting 1 star due to its pathetic and racist staff. The moment we walked in and placed the order, the staff just gave us attitude and didn’t even want to serve us. Why, cuz we don’t look like Italians and we are brown and not white. We are from India but live in USA for past 30+ years and have traveled to 25+ countries.

I must say that Italian hostility and specially this place just left a bad taste in our mouth. All the staff here was just racist and you could see that so clearly and they don’t even hide it.

This country is beautiful but ppl who work in this place really don’t help and leaves a bad feeling for visitors. Very disappointed with this ice place and low...

It's unfortunate I've to give this place a 2 star, if prefer giving it no stars to be honest because although the gelato was okay, the service was the worst I've ever received. The girls working there today we're not friendly, they basically treated me like they were doing me a favour and even made an inappropriate hand gesture after giving me my gelato. I would've probably not bothered getting any gelato here with the service I got but since they had already taken payment and refused a refund I had very little choice. If you're a tourist like myself, skip this place. They aren't very welcoming and the rude treatment will definitely leave a sour taste...
