Locanda del Cerriglio — Restaurant in Naples

Finished a bad meal in a nice piazza in the touristy part of the university area. Unfortunately the Taverna del cerriglia is one of a few restaurant style eating places in the area. The staff pulled us in with a large menu written in english. The selection looked good and varied, prices were high but they sort of have a cornered market - so we sat down and were immediately bombarded by the waiter with his long list of what we would be having. Much to his surprize we said NO that is not what we want. As he hovered, the outdoor patio of the restaurant was essentially empty, we selected what WE wanted. Turns out they did not really serve that. The risotto with asparagus, came out with peas, because the cook was out of asparagus! The spaghetti with lobster came out with prawns. No apology was offered for either. Unfortunately, as we were both hungry, we chose not to WALK AWAY from the Taverna del cerriglia, but ate the less that stellar tasting meals. Our real issue, other than the BAD FOOD and BAD SERVICE came with the bill. Suddenly our 3 euro house wines had been substantially upgraded in price. There was both a TABLE CHARGE and SERVICE CHARGE - neither of which would have been a problem if the BAD SERVICE and BAD TABLE issues had not been there. The waiter claiming he was the owner/manager would NOT bring me a business card and only reduced the price of the BAD WINE. Overall this was our worst meal experience - I even warned other patrons outside about the waiters SCAM. Obviously I recommend that you DO NOT eat at the Taverna...

My husband and I went here for dinner without a reservation, arriving right as they opened and we happened to go on a holiday (Easter Monday).

The owner, Stefano, let us know that the evening menu would be a fixed price (which is uncommon for them) with several traditional Napoli Italian Easter dishes including: a charcuterie plate, fava beans, a spinach broth soup, a traditional bread with meat and eggs baked into it, lamb (grilled, baked in the oven, and also a pasta made with a lamb broth), a meat ragu, and a lasagna. There were also several options for dessert, we had a lemon cake, and a strawberry shortcake.

The fixed price was 45 euro per person, and then we paid 16 euro for a bottle of wine. It was SO MUCH FOOD and we left feeling so happy and full.

We had a great experience with the staff and appreciated the conversation. The owner also gave us a little bit of the history of the building, which is the oldest standing tavern in Naples and has some of the original features of the building like a fountain in the basement room.

Both of the wait staff were helpful and friendly, as was the chef when he popped out of the kitchen. There is a beautiful lighted bar when you enter the building, and they have an assortment of the various local liquors, including meloncello which tastes exactly like a cantaloupe and is super delicious.

I can't recommend this restaurant enough if you're looking for an intimate setting and an authentic...

TRASIRE A LO CERRIGLIO È DDOCE (Ma diffidate delle imitazioni!)

Nei meandri del Cerriglio (dove nel Medioevo forse c'era un boschetto di querce), nel vicolo più stretto dell'intera città, sorge una delle più antiche e famose locande di Napoli: la Locanda del Cerriglio, ubicata tra piazzetta di porto e il vicolo di Santa Maria la Nova.

Si narra che fosse già nota sin dalla fine del 1300, sia per la bontà della sua cucina e del suo vino, che per il gran numero di avventori. Luogo di ristoro e di soggiorno, preferito da nobili che volevano provare l’ebbrezza dell’incontro con il popolo, da plebei che per pochi soldi vi si sfamavano, da intellettuali che discutevano di politica e filosofia, da donne di malaffare che erano in cerca di clienti e da grandi artisti in cerca d'ispirazione. Tra i grandi che la frequentarono ricordiamo: Giovan Battista Della Porta, Giambattista Basile, Giulio Cesare Cortese, Sgruttendio, Giovan Battista del Tufo, Carlo Celano, Benedetto Croce, Emmanuele Bidera, Vincenzo D’Auria, Antonio Genovesi, Gonsalvo Carelli e Michelangelo Merisi.

La Locanda del Cerriglio, che in passato fungeva sia da ristorante che da albergo (come testimoniano le sale superiori dedicate ai pernottamenti) è celebre inoltre per la spietata aggressione che fu tesa nell’ottobre del 1609 al pittore Michelangelo Merisi detto “il Caravaggio”, proprio all’uscita del locale. Quella notte si bevve e si rise, ma quattro uomini s'intrufolarono in silenzio nei locali. Michelangelo, in fuga a Napoli dopo aver ucciso Ranuccio Tomassoni e forse ebbro di vino, fu preso a pugni, cadde a terra sanguinante e stordito dai colpi. Da tale aggressione l’artista ne uscì vivo ma colpito duramente al corpo, e profondamente segnato sul volto e nello spirito. Ma come andarono davvero le cose? Tutto ciò rimane un mistero. Tra le tante ipotesi si pensa che “lo sfregio” al Caravaggio fu una vendetta per un insulto all’onore e alla reputazione, come prevedeva il codice della malavita di quel tempo.

Oggi La Locanda del Cerriglio è stata riportata in auge, mantenendo però la storia di Napoli e del Caravaggio, tanto da essere ufficialmente nominata ”Locale Storico d’Italia”. La Locanda continua ad essere luogo d’incontro per intellettuali e artisti, come dimostrano le rassegne del Festival del Giornalismo e del Libro d’inchiesta e le rassegneche hanno visto non può mancare la rievocazione della tradizione dei piatti genuini di cucina tipica napoletana, in un’atmosfera calorosa e accogliente.
