Retro Gusto — Restaurant in Otranto

This restaurant did NOT live up to its reputation! The grilled fish dish was €30 and was dried up and clearly over cooked. My partner was also not impressed with his meal. The head waiter/mamager in charge seemed to be hovering everywhere and very nervous as an older man, perhaps the owner, was calling the shots. This spoiled the atmosphere. When I called a junior waiter and asked them to tell the head waiter my fish was terribly dry and tough, which he did, he studiously avoided coming to our table to discuss it! I then told the woman who took payment & she looked very embarrassed but too afraid to call the head waiter/manager over. All I all almost $200 for a substandard meal. Basta con le chiacchiere, è tempo di parlare del menu. Il menu è una ricca sinfonia di piatti gustosi che vi lascerà indecisi sulla scelta. Si parte con i piatti classici della tradizione, come il polpo cotto nella pignata, il purè di fave e cicorie, e il crudité, per poi passare ai primi piatti innovativi, come i cappellacci, gli spaghetti, i raviolacci e molto altro ancora. Io e la mia compagna abbiamo optato per il polpo in pignata con patate e crostini di pane di Altamura, oltre al filetto di sgombro scottato in padella, presentato su un letto di crema di peperoni. Le pappardelle, gli spaghetti e i cappellacci sono deliziosi, ma come si fa a resistere a un risotto ai frutti di mare? Ci sono arrivate due vere e proprie opere d’arte, come potete notare dalle foto. La composizione del piatto era impeccabile così come il gusto, semplicemente indescrivibile. Era passato parecchio tempo da quando avevamo gustato un risotto così buono dove la freschezza delle materie prime è tangibile. Sazi dell’abbondante risotto e spossati a causa del caldo eccessivo, decidiamo di chiudere in bellezza questo pranzo con un dissetante e immancabile sorbetto al limone. Oh, quasi dimenticavo! Ci hanno servito un delizioso pane fatto in casa al tavolo, sia bianco che alle verdure; quest'ultimo è stato semplicemente straordinario. Presentation of the food is fantastic, but that's about all that was good here. We were really excited to try this place and sadly we were left wanting more.

The quantities were good, sadly the food lacked the flavor. We had a pasta dish and the grilled seafood selection, the pasta was cooked well but the sauce had no flavor. The grilled seafood was nice, but nothing outstanding. The staff started out well and then showed any interest and quickly fell out of favor with us.

It's apparently in the Michelin guide, but do yourself a favor and find another place to spend your money.
