Pizzottando – A Joyful Slice of Palermo in Piazza San Francesco After spending a month exploring the culinary heart of Palermo, Pizzottando quickly became one of my favorite places to unwind, eat, and celebrate life. Nestled in the softly glowing Piazza San Francesco, this charming restaurant offers a magical nighttime setting where locals gather and the energy is unmistakably Sicilian.
Tucked away down a small side street, it might feel a little spooky at first (this is Palermo, after all), but don’t let that deter you—it’s safe, welcoming, and absolutely worth the walk. Once you arrive, you’ll find a lively outdoor space that can accommodate any group size, from solo diners to large families and everything in between.
This isn’t a place where tourists dominate. Expect to be surrounded by Sicilian families, couples, and the occasional adventurous traveler. That authenticity, combined with the genuinely warm and charismatic wait staff, makes every visit feel like coming home.
And then there’s the pizza—creative, flavorful, and consistently excellent. I didn’t make it through the whole menu during my stay, but I sampled enough to know this kitchen takes pride in what it does. The Vucciria, with caramelized red onions, Barolo reduction, and figs, is a standout—sweet, savory, and unforgettable. Another favorite was the Al Pesto, featuring bright pesto, creamy buffalo mozzarella, and juicy cherry tomatoes. Americans missing pepperoni will find comfort in the Salame Piccante, but I encourage you to try something new—this is the place to explore.
While pizza is the main attraction, the menu doesn’t stop there. You’ll also find antipasti and other dishes, great for sharing or starting your meal off right.
As the evening rolls on, Pizzottando comes alive. Music starts to play, and soon the entire restaurant is singing, dancing, and waving napkins in the air. Locals and visitors alike join in—it’s spontaneous, joyful, and completely infectious.
And it’s a great value. Pizzas range from €5 to €14, and drinks are just as reasonable—€2 for a beer. I often opted for a German brew over the local Moretti or Messina, but either way, you’re in for a good time. Cocktails are also available, though I didn’t try them myself.
It’s worth repeating: the wait staff are hard-working, attentive, and bring an infectious sense of fun to the entire experience.
Tips: • Arrive early to avoid a wait—before 6 PM, and you may have the place to yourself. After 8, expect a short wait, especially on weekends. • It helps if you speak a little Italian, though the staff do their best to communicate with everyone. • If you feel uneasy about walking dark streets at night that often have broken glass and trash, take a taxi. • Come with an open mind, a big appetite, and be ready to sing.
Kid-friendly, affordable, and unforgettable, Pizzotando is more than a pizzeria—it’s an experience. One I returned to again and again, and one I can’t wait to return to.
I wrote this review because I truly love this place—the food, the staff, the atmosphere. If you’re looking for the best pizza in Sicily, this just might be one of them. Of course, there’s no single “best.” Even the legendary da Michele in Naples focuses on just a few versions of the Margherita. But in Palermo, Pizzottando is a must-visit—not just for the food, but for a richer, more spirited, and thoroughly...
