It's Palermo in the evening. Actually it's Ballarò in the evening, to be precise. The chaos of the market full of tourists is over but mountains of artichoke stems still remain in the streets. You can hear a drum in the distance and also the sound of loud singing somewhere not far. Sounds like a party or many parties, yet all streets are shrouded in darkness.

It is in that setting that you'll find Trattoria Il Bersagliere. Nothing about the experience is elegant nor fancy. It's as rough as it gets, yet it's authentic to the bone. The tripe with saffron is the most tender you've ever had. The fried seafood is the crispiest ever served to you. Service is quick because there's a line of people waiting for you to be finished and real estate is limited.

If you want to be treated, served and charged as a tourist, do yourself a favour and go elsewhere. If you are after the real Palermo dinner, you've...

We wanted to eat a quick lunch in a local setting, and the place seemed right. The waiter suggested that he pick the dishes for us, and if we don't like it we won't pay. I refused. My wife didn't. When my wife said she didn't like it, he said that we have to pay anyway (?). Her pasta was definitely undercooked, and I am a big fan of 'Al dente'. We settled on them preparing the dish once more. After that, it was OK, and so were mine squids. The receipt was handwritten and totally illegible. When I asked the waiter to read its content, he brought me a new one. Also illegible but with a lower amount due (?) They also made a big fuss about card payment. If my expectations hadn't been low from the start, I would have given a lower rating. Admittedly, there were a lot of locals, but perhaps tourists get a...

No frills, but that’s what makes it great! This is the kind of mom and pop restaurant that you would come back to again and again. Honestly, this was my favorite restaurant in Palermo. I had a simple pasta of olive oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes and a salad. It was absolutely delicious. The staff were so friendly. We had a lovely chat in broken Italian and English! Just the kind of experience I love to have while traveling. To top it all off prices were the best in town! €8 for pastas and €4 for contorni. Didn’t try the house wine but it was also cheap! Don’t miss out on the opportunity for a wonderful, reasonably priced, and delicious meal.

this is a very local spot, off the beaten track, expect great food and truly italian service (be sure to read menu ahead as they’re not very patient) the pasta was perfectly cooked al dente, incredibly generous portions, absolutely delicious, best squid pasta we’ve ever had. for the fried calamari, the size of the calamari was so large and fresh, firm but tender and perfectly fried. not too greasy didn’t taste like oil. just absolutely incredible, wish we ordered to servings. - 1/2 bottle of white wine - 2.00€ - nero di seppia - 8.00€ - calamari fritti - 10.00€ total for 2 = 24€

Came across this restaurant walking past and saw great vibes. Met some locals later in the evening who ended up taking us here for dinner. This food was incredible, but most of all the service was amazing, I don’t usually recommend places but this place is the one to go to if you’re in Palermo, experience the true Sicilian cuisine and culture through the personalities of the people who run it. Not a single word of common language was shared, yet so much connection was in place. They were funny, kind and welcoming.
