We came in some time last Tuesday during a torrential sudden downpour of rain at around 7:30pm. There were no customers in the restaurant, just an anxious owner who kept pacing back and forth, hoping to see more customers walk through the door.
This meal was slightly past midway of our 2 week trip in Italy, and after eating so much amazing Pasta, we figured we might as well satisfy our American burger cravings. This was a huge mistake.
The two burgers we ordered were so bad, we felt truly bad for the owner of the restaurant. Never in my life have I had a burger taste so bad. I think a 0.99 cheeseburger at Mcdonald's has infinitely more flavor. In fact, I would consider Jack in the Box's "Jumbo Jack" (yuck) or Burger King's "Whopper" (yuck again), infinitely more tasteful than what they served here. There was no way that his business would survive serving food like this. My review is written sincerely in hopes to help the owner receive some feedback, so that he can make some changes before it's too late.
The "angus steak" burger's meat appeared to look like meat you would find in a packaged can. The consistency of the meat was mind boggling. My wife ate a small portion of the meat and left the entire patty on the plate when the owner came by to pick up our meals. The choice of bread (bun) as well is questionable, and I think a regular soft hamburger bun would have tasted better. The meat was completely flavorless. No salt, nothing? I was really puzzled and tried to wrap my head around how a hamburger could taste so bad. Here in the states, you go to the market, order some ground meat, buy some tomatoes, lettuce onions, and regular hamburger buns, and you have a delicious home made burger with no extra fancy seasoning at all. I just don't know how the food here could have tasted so bad. I tried to drench it in ketchup which didn't really help. It was also advertised as having bacon in both our burgers, but there was one small 2cm piece in one of the corners of each of our burgers.
I think given the location, we would have tried to avoid a tourist trap kind of place like this. But I was so so disappointed by the 4.3 star reviews (at the time of this writing). This was easily by far the worst meal we had in Italy. The price was about 30 euros for water and two burgers for two as well, steep. No other customers the entire team we were here.
To the owner: please I beg you: visit America -- if you can even get close to what is considered "average" here, you will make so much money in Italy. Plan Check in Los Angeles - truffle burger. Any of the Habit locations - have amazing burgers. Please I'm...
Read morePompei is a lovely place, filled with amazing restaurants and huge amounts of history. After a long (long) (LONG) day trawling round the ancient city, we needed somewhere to relax and refuel. This place, literally across the road from the main entrance to the Ruins, was somewhere we initially passed by but then came back to, and I'm so glad we did!
The food was amazing - the Custer burger (as the photo) is HUGE. The burger itself was well-cooked, retaining pinkness in the middle and brought out medium. Personally, and this is absolutely just my preference, I'd have liked to have had mine medium-rare but I'm sure had I known and asked they would have accommodated my request. The bacon on my burger was beyond delicious - it might have been the tastiest bacon I've ever eaten in my whole life. Overall, the burger probably weighed about a pound (500g) and was fabulous. Comes with a small side of french fries, which were equally delicious.
My wife had the Andrea burger, which she assures me was equally lovely.
The pricing is incredibly reasonable, with most burgers being about €10-12. Drinks are reasonably priced as well - 50cl beers are around €5, and a small selection of cocktails for less than €8 in all cases.
I wanted to try the steak, but this is priced by weight at €4.50/ 100g with a minimum order of 600g, so €27 minimum and I suspect is intended for 2 people to share. If the minimum order had been, say, 400g I would have almost certainly jumped on it.
Overall, this was a great find that we were lucky to come across. I'd recommend it to ANYONE who happens to be in Pompei and is looking for a...
Read moreGood beer options, and the steak was nice, but I thought charging us €3 for a small portion of bread (that we did not ask for), and being charged €1 for an extra (which was for either the very small portion of mustard, or the taster of beer I asked for before getting a pint), charging for either is ridiculous IMO, and I feel it’s a real shame, as that spoiled things. Giving 3/5 for atmosphere just as we arrived at opening and no other customers were there, so going for middle ground. Also charging €5 for the portion of Courgette that we received wasn’t acceptable!!
The owners responded to this review, so I will update accordingly:
€3 ‘cover charge’, which I guess is the equivalent of a ‘service charge’, so that is fine. charging €1 for a tiny portion of mustard isn’t something i’ve experienced before, sorry but I think that is ridiculous. the quality of the courgettes was not my point, my point was the small portion size considering you charge €5. if you re-read my original review I commented on good beer options/steak was nice, but that other factors spoiled...
