Naples sadly was a general disappointment for me outside of the amazing Neapolitan Pizza. Pompei on the other hand could not have been more amazing... a huge part of that was Roberto and me stumbling onto Add'u Mimi. It was so great I had to eat there twice.
The first time I walked in was through the front door. The loveliest elderly couple walked me to the back and introduced me to Roberto. Roberto then said he can take me in as long as I order/eat fast since they are closing soon. I said sure since the glowing reviews looked insane. That first night I was served the BEST seafood pasta and a beer. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the seafood tasted so fresh. Before leaving, I was given a Wild Fennel Drink for FREE that was so good even Steve Buscemi apparently even liked. Roberto even showed me a picture of him with Steve! How cool!
The next day, I went to tour Pompei and also hiked up Vesuvius. On the way back to town I was craving for more Add'u Mimi so I called and sure enough... Roberto recognized my voice and said I should come back in!
Wanting something entirely different this time, Roberto proceeds to show me a whole fresh sea bass. He said he will cook that for me in a very classic Italian way. I forgot (and forgive me Roberto I lost the piece of paper you wrote on for me lol), but the rough English translation for the dish is "Sea Bass in Crazy Water". Honestly it was cooked so simply (likely with just water, salt and oil) the flavor of the fish was accented fairly well. It was accompanied by an equally simple salad. To finish it off I had some white cake with pears in it. It was delicious as well.
Before finally taking off for the train to Rome, Roberto proceeds to give a free limoncello shot. When he learned I had a train ride, he asked if I wanted still or sparkling water for the ride home! WHAT? I've never felt more at home and saying goodbye to Roberto felt like saying goodbye to my Italian dad haha.
I'm not sure when I'll get back to Pompei but I'll treasure my two meals here likely forever. Go here for the excellent food and even...
Read moreI've never written a Google review before, but this place was so amazing I had to come here to sing it's praises. We stumbled upon it around 14:00 on a Saturday after visiting Pompeii and leaving through the gate near the Colosseo. When we entered the restaurant, we were ushered through an empty dining room and past a courtyard to a back dining room next to the kitchen. The place was full of a party of 60 people who'd made their reservation several months in advance. A man was playing the guitar and singing and the owner was joining in between hurriedly serving all the patrons. So atmosphere? Amazing! As for the food - we've been in Italy 7 days now and this was our best meal. It may have even spoiled other restaurants for us. The ensalada verde is simple but the mixture of vinaigrette and greens was sublime. We also ordered the bruschetta and mozzarella and prosciutto appetizers to start. Literally the best mozzarella we've had in this country. The bread was flavorful and crisp - again the best we've had here. Both pasta dishes we chose to start were so ridiculously good we couldn't decide which was the winner. And the calamari and roasted sausage we got were excellently prepared. Best calamari I've ever had anywhere. The prices for everything were either right around the 10 euro mark or below. Their house rossa wine for 5 euro was smooth and perfect....
Read moreOur group of friends was visiting the Island of Ischia and one member of our group told us the most amazing story about this small restaurant in Pompeii where three years prior he had eaten one of the best meals of his life and was treated so well by Roberto when they needed help leaving the city later that evening. We decided we all wanted to spend the last day of our trip in Pompeii and find Roberto to try this food again. In the service industry, so many clients come and go day in and day out so we were not sure if Roberto would remember our friend. After all three years is a long time and although they had an amazing experience who knew what would happen. Towards the end of our meal when most patrons were trickling out John asked Roberto if he remembered that night. Not only did he remember in vivid detail the day John was talking about, but he remembered the parties first names and what he served them. Roberto truly serves his food from the heart. It is amazing the amount of attention he gives to each guest and his recommendations from the menu. I am lucky to have met him and tried his food-- which was amazing (my favorite was the gnocchi and rum baba but it was all delicious!) but more so to relive a great moment with a friend while we had a night to remember of our own. Do not pass up on this restaurant while you...
