Panini Il Cencio — Restaurant in Siena

We grabbed a quick lunch there and it was so good that we brought a friend there for dinner the same day. Both times we ordered their panini, which the best we had during our years of traveling around Italy! We couldn't think of anything better even from gastronomical paradises like Napoli, Bologna or Palermo......

The key to their excellent panini is what went in between the breads. We chose freshly chopped porchetta as a base, which had crispy skin and tender and flavorful meat. In both occasions the paninis were stuffed to bursting with this goodie, and then we customized them with additional fillings like tomato and mozzarella slices as well as a generous dollop of their custom made salsa sauce. I am certainly not afraid of a hearty meal, but even I can barely finish such a hefty but delicious panini!

We were served by two different persons during our two meals, and in both cases they were extremely friendly and patient with our dithering over this "embarrassment of riches".

There are no words in any language to describe how glorious these panini are. This is definitely one of the most delicious foods I've ever eaten in my entire life. The place is a small and cozy eatery where you can assemble your own panini. It is run by three friendly ladies who are always joking and smiling. There's also a nice and small terrace on the upper floor where you can enjoy your panino while admiring the beautiful square. My winning combination was pancetta, arugula, pecorino cheese, and truffle sauce (not the one in the pictures as I was too excited to take photos). Every bite was like eating a piece of heaven, especially when biting into a crunchy piece of the pancetta. Domenica piovosa, ora di pranzo con due bambini, uno dei quali molto piccolo ancora sul passeggino. Entriamo, proviamo a trovarci un angolino su sgabelli e panche allestiti dal locale. Il locale molto piccolo era pieno di gente e cerchiamo di adattarci come possiamo in fondo a ridosso del frigo delle bibite e della porta d'accesso al bagno e al magazzino. Spostiamo due sgabelli situati sulle panche dell'entrata per accomodarci e una signora del personale provvede subito a rimetterlo a posto. Vabè, lasciamo correre. Ci accingiamo a farci preparare i panini e la signora inizia a prendere gli ingredienti a mani nude con le quali si presta anche a fare conti alla cassa e toccare soldi, ma lasciamo correre di nuovo. Ci portano i due panini e la focaccia che ahimè era quasi bruciata. Chiediamo di rifarla e da lì in poi iniziano le ripicche. Una signora esce da dietro al bancone per spostare di nuovo tutto ciò che avevamo leggermente spostato per trovarci un posticino. Il tutto in maniera molto infastidita. Ci chiede di spostarci un po' e ci accingiamo a farlo, ma in maniere poco cortese ci dice di sbrigarci perché stiamo chiudendo il passaggio verso il bagno dove doveva recarsi un ragazzo. Cavolata, nessuno è andato in bagno per tutto il tempo della nostra rimanenza. A quel punto, stanca un po' di tutto, le dico che il passeggino può spostarlo lei dove vuole se avesse trovato un posto. E indovinate un po' dove lo posiziona? Davanti al frigorifero che ci aveva chiesto di lasciare libero. Dico alla signora che stavamo abbozzando da un po' e cerco di farle capire che poteva chiudere un occhio poiché non eravamo assolutamente lì per ostacolarli. Lei insiste e le faccio presente che oltre tutto avevano provato a rifilarci una focaccia bruciata e mi risponde che ce l'avevano rifatta e io le dico che l'avevamo pagata e non rubata quindi mi sembrava il minimo. Se ne va infastidita e ogni tanto faceva capolino con un altro ragazzo per vedere cosa stessimo facendo. Classico posto in cui si spenna e maltratta il turista senza pensare che se non fosse per turisti e studenti probabilmente guadagnerebbero meno della metà. In tutto ciò...
