Read moreWe were amazed at the first look at the Duomo. Her beauty leaves no one indifferent. It is one of the most famous churches in Italy and one of the greatest wonders in the history of art of all time. In the architectural, pictorial and sculptural fields, it fascinates all sorts of visitors or curious people who stop to admire it. The cathedral is extremely fascinating and it is a privilege to be in this space. Duomo di Siena is a medieval church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral was designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The dome was completed in 1264. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. Senius and Aschius are the two legendary founders of Siena. They were brothers, sons of Remus and thus Romulus was their uncle. The finest Italy artists, during that time, completed works in the Cathedral. These artists were Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Donatello ( St. John the Baptist ), Pinturicchio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Bernini. The cathedral's valuable pieces of art including The Feast of Herod by Donatello, and works by Bernini and the young Michelangelo ( Saint Paul sculpture ) make it an extraordinary museum of Italian sculpture. It also delights us the beautiful church floor. The inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy, covering the entire floor of the cathedral. This venture went from the 14th to the 16th centuries, and about forty artists made their contributions. The floor consists of 56 panels in different sizes. They represent the sibyls, scenes from the Old Testament, allegories and virtues. Most are still in their original state. We can further admire the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, the Chigi Chapel, the Baptistry and the Piccolomini Library. Extremely...
Read moreThis spring I had the pleasure of visiting the Cathedral of Siena, and it was absolutely breathtaking! From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the stunning façade, which is adorned with intricate black and white striped marble. It’s unlike any other cathedral I’ve seen and truly gives Siena its unique character. The design really showcases the Gothic style, and you can tell that every detail was crafted with immense care. Once inside, I was overwhelmed by the beauty that surrounded me. The interior is just as impressive, with its striking striped columns and gorgeous mosaic floor that tells stories from the Bible. Each panel is a work of art, and I found myself wandering around, trying to take in every detail. The vibrant colors and elaborate designs make the floor a highlight of the cathedral, and I learned that it’s only fully uncovered during specific times of the year, which made me feel lucky to see it. One of my favorite parts of the visit was the Piccolomini Library, which is a true gem within the cathedral. The frescoes that decorate the walls are absolutely stunning, depicting the life of Pope Pius II. The colors are so vivid, and the craftsmanship is exceptional. It felt like stepping into another world, filled with history and artistry. I also climbed to the top of the cathedral for a view of Siena, and it was worth every step! The panoramic view of the city, with its terracotta rooftops and rolling hills, was simply unforgettable. Siena Cathedral is not just a place of worship; it’s a treasure trove of art and history. The blend of architecture, artistry, and spirituality creates an atmosphere that is both awe-inspiring and peaceful. I left feeling enriched and inspired, and I can’t recommend a visit to this magnificent cathedral enough. If you’re ever in Tuscany, make sure to put Siena on...
