Antica Trattoria Papei — Restaurant in Siena

Today, Friday August 21st 2020 my wife and I had dinner in Papei for the 3rd time this Holiday.

The food, wine and service were excellent, every time. I tipped accordingly. Today the bill was 126,50 euro and I wanted to tip 20 euro, but I only had a 50 euro note. I always pay tips cash and the bill by bank card, Papei is used to this method. At the cash register I asked the waiter 30 euro back, but then the owner interfered. He was furious, how can I pay with 50 euro when the bill is 126,50? He shouted at me waved his arms around in a fury and he nearly hit me. Two of the waiters who served us, knew from experience what I wanted, so I asked them to explain to the boss. He yelled at me some more, viciously. Then returned 40 euro. I said, no no, 30 euro back please. He went crazy, he nearly blacked out. The waiters were ashamed by the extremely bad behaviour of their boss and explained again. After 5 minutes sheer torture I finally got my 30 euro and paid the bill by bank card. I asked the owner: Are you happy now?

When we walked away, one of the waiters came to apologize for the rude behaviour of his boss.

I can recommend the food, everything, the wines, the service by the waiters, but be careful with the owner. He might attack you for over tipping!

Oggi, venerdì 21 agosto 2020 io e mia moglie abbiamo cenato a Papei per la terza volta in questa vacanza.

Il cibo, il vino e il servizio erano eccellenti, ogni volta. Ho dato una mancia di conseguenza. Oggi il conto era di 126,50 euro e volevo dare una mancia di 20 euro, ma avevo solo una banconota da 50 euro. Pago sempre le mance in contanti e il conto con carta di credito, Papei è abituato a questo metodo. Alla cassa ho chiesto al cameriere 30 euro indietro, ma poi il proprietario è intervenuto. Era furioso, come posso pagare con 50 euro quando il conto è 126,50? Mi ha gridato e ha agitato le braccia con rabbia e mi ha quasi colpito. Due dei camerieri che ci hanno servito, sapevano per esperienza cosa volevo, così ho chiesto loro di spiegare al capo. Mi urlò ancora un po ', in modo violento. Poi sono tornati 40 euro. Ho detto no no, 30 euro indietro per favore. È impazzito, è quasi svenuto. I camerieri si sono vergognati del comportamento estremamente pessimo del loro capo e hanno spiegato di nuovo. Dopo 5 minuti di pura tortura ho finalmente ricevuto i miei 30 euro e ho pagato il conto con carta di credito. Ho chiesto al proprietario: sei felice adesso?

Quando ci siamo allontanati, uno dei camerieri è venuto a scusarsi per il comportamento scortese del suo capo.

Totally overrated! What's with these 4.2 stars?! Maybe if you like eating charcoal when you order grilled meat... There were even people waiting to get a seat while the surrounding restaurants were half-empty. Our neighbours didn't like their food either. We had the Antipasti misto Toscani, grilled chicken, grilled veal and green beans as side dish. The antipasti plate consisted of 3 slices prosciutto (good), 3 slices of salami, an just okay bruschetta al pomodoro and 2 bread slices with an intestine topping (that we didn't like), no olives, no salad, nada... The chicken was well done, but it was slightly covered with pieces of black coal, just like the veal, which was far from being tender. NOTE: If you order meat and there is nothing else written in the menu, YOU WILL ONLY GET THAT PIECE OF MEAT. I like restaurants with simple menues but then surprise you with the a plate that's topped up with some extras that weren't written in the menu... Well, last but not least the green beans swam in oil and the waiter didn't care about us, forgot my order of red wine, asked if 'everything was ok' and walked on instead of listening to my answer. My recommendation: Avoid it!!!! Go somewhere that looks nice to you, don't follow google ratings for restaurants (I know that saying doesn't make sense when you read my long review, but still don't give too much about...

Absolute disaster. I’m a siena local and i’ve been to almost every high rated restaurant here. I have never experienced this level of negligence in anywhere else. Took them 15 minutes to realize we have been trying to get their attention to order. We were rushed into ordering and even though we ordered starters, sides and main courses separately they all came at the SAME time. This is not how it’s supposed to be done and everybody knows that. The servers couldn’t have made it more obvious that we had to rush to eat. The main got cold when we tried to finish our starters.. How disappointing. The worst part is when we tried to discuss it with the server he reacted to us in the most disrespectful obnoxious way possible and didn’t even try to understand us or listen to the problem. He turned around and continued his business while i was trying to talk. Just because we’re young it doesn’t mean we can’t be taken seriously. Guess we have to come with our parents to be considered a customer worthy of their attention. He basically said he couldn’t have cared less if we were pleased or not. The whole dinner lasted 20 minutes and it was forced to be this way. Never experienced any kind of joke like this as a customer. Definitely won’t be coming or recommending this place....
