Ararat — Restaurant in Sirmione

I have never left a review for any restaurant before, as I’ve always been either satisfied or at least moderately happy with the experience. However, in this case, I’m compelled to write my first one because Im in shock!

The service staff didn’t understand a single word in English. They gestured that it wasn’t possible to order wine by the glass, only by the bottle. We ordered a bottle priced at 30 euros, but on the bill, it was listed as 37 euros. They charged an additional 8 euros for service, although, in my opinion, they didn’t deserve it due to their lack of customer friendliness. Another couple managed to order a glass of wine, but we were forced to buy a whole bottle and then even overcharged for it. We ended up paying 81 euros in total, and I left hungry.

The photos don’t reflect the reality at all. The restaurant was filled with smoke, to the point where my eyes were burning. The cold appetizer plate was a joke—a sweet vanilla pancake, a few dry scraps of ham, a small amount of salty cheese (which was okay), but it’s shocking that they would serve such tiny shreds of meat to customers. And we didn’t get any olives!!

We also ordered lulya kebab, which came with reheated, stale potatoes (likely microwaved) and a salad—just dry arugula with no dressing. Overall, it was a disaster—81 euros for nothing! What an unexpected joy to find an Armenian restaurant tucked away in Sirmione! As an Armenian myself, it felt SO special to see our food represented here and done so beautifully.

I ordered the pelmeni (a Russian-style dumpling) which was perfectly boiled, filled with turkey and cilantro, and full of comforting flavor. I also had the lamb chops and lule kabob, served with fresh greens, sumac spiced red onions, pomegranate seeds, and seasoned potato wedges. Having grown up with Armenian food, I can confidently say the entire order was OUTSTANDING. It reminded me of my mom’s and grandma’s cooking but with a refined, restaurant quality touch.

For dessert, I tried the baklava, which was rich and hearty, with a more pie-like top crust instead of the typical thin filo. It was delicious and unique.

One of the best parts of the meal was chatting in Armenian with the owner, who was so warm, kind, and welcoming. It truly felt like a little piece of home in an unexpected place. I highly recommend it to anyone, Armenian or not, who wants a comforting, flavorful, and...

Da meine Frau und ich ursprünglich aus der Kaukasischen Region kommen, hatten wir uns entschieden auf unserer Fahrrad-Tour in dem Restaurant Halt zu machen. Die Fotos und Bewertungen machten einen guten Eindruck. Vorweg, der Gesamteindruck war eher enttäuschend. Das Essen ist geschmacklich nur Durchschnitt, die Preise entsprechen in keinster Weise der Qualität. Der Caperto ist mir 4€/Person für die Lage des Restaurants und das, was geboten wird unverhältnismäßig hoch. Meine Frau hatte einen Schaschlik bei dem ein Stück nicht durchgebraten war, das kann mal passieren. Aber die Reaktion der Kellnerin war enttäuschend. Als wir sie darauf hinwiesen, dass das eine Stück nicht gar ist, fragte sie ob der Teller abgeräumt werden kann oder das Fleisch noch einmal auf den Grill soll. Aus meiner Sicht stellt sich so eine Frage nicht. Natürlich muss das Fleisch noch einmal auf den Grill und es wird sich beim Gast entschuldigt. Insbesondere bei der Größe der Portion. Einen Tag später haben wir übrigens in einem sehr guten Restaurant in Limone gegessen. Da haben wir gesehen, dass ein sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis sehr gut möglich ist.

Update: Die Reaktion des Restaurants zeigt, dass sie es nicht verstanden haben. Das verbliebe nicht zu Ende gebratene Stück machte ca. 1/5 (20%) der Portion aus. Und auch wenn es nur ein kleines Stück wäre, gebietet es sich auf die schlechte Vorbereitung des Essens zu reagieren. Wenn sie besonders hohe Preise haben und das mit einer sehr guten Zubereitung begründen, dann darf so etwas nicht passieren.
