Il Mitreo — Restaurant in Sutri

My father and I are walking the Francigena pilgrimage to the Vatican and stopped in Sutri for lunch, hoping to try something typical. Unfortunately, we had one of the rudest restaurant experiences I have ever encountered.

The restaurant advertises that it is open until 3 p.m. We arrived at 1 p.m. when plenty of tables were free and several guests around us were still being served fresh dishes. We sat down, waited, and when the staff finally approached us, they kicked us out, saying they were not doing any service today.

When I asked why, given that the restaurant was clearly open and serving others, the staff simply repeated there was nothing available for us. I even asked politely if they could recommend another restaurant in Sutri, and the only answer was: “Just go somewhere in the old part of town.”

The treatment was extremely rude, dismissive, and well below any acceptable standard of service worldwide. This was deeply disappointing, especially for pilgrims and visitors who count on the hospitality of local places along the way.

Avoid this place. Sutri deserves better representatives of its cuisine and hospitality.

Thank you very much for responding so quickly to our review. I am extremely glad to know that it was all just a miscommunication and that indeed your staff and restaurant were not simply being petty or lacking in any sense of style.

If it truly was your desire to serve us, may I make a small suggestion? For the three short hours a day that you are open, perhaps you could engage someone as a greeting staff, a host or hostess to welcome guests as they arrive. When we came, we stood for some time at the entrance without anyone greeting us, which is why we assumed it was acceptable to sit at one of the many empty tables.

If hiring someone for those three hours is too much, then a simple sign at the entrance saying “please wait to be seated” would surely do the trick.

And finally, in case the three empty tables we saw when we arrived were in fact reserved, which of course we had no way of knowing, a small reserved tent card on the table would have been extremely helpful to avoid such misunderstandings.

I was then very sorry to see, when passing by the restaurant an hour and a half later, about thirty minutes before closing time, that the guests you were expecting never actually showed up. Truly unfortunate, although perhaps another small...

È uno di quei posti dove si torna volentieri, e anche dopo 4 anni devo dire che le aspettative non sono tradite, infatti ottima l'accoglienza e la simpatia del proprietario nonché cameriere dato che siamo alla terza visita. Ottimi i menù proposti veramente "caserecci" (anche se 2 cotiche sulla pasta e fagioli io le avrei messe), comunque la scelta è abbastanza varia per tutti i gusti e le portate più che decorose e ben adeguate. Di certo più che gradita penso sia obbligatoria la prenotazione perché trovare un posto in una locanda che offre al massimo 30 coperti (forse sto eccedendo) e estremamente improbabile. L'ambiente è veramente simpatico e piacevolmente raccolto e ben curato in versione old style, le sale sono 2, una a piano terra un po' più grande in grado di accogliere credo una quindicina di persone, e una al piano di sopra dove mi sono trovato io con soli 2 tavoli per circa 8 persone, l'ambiente e molto pulito e confortevole. Da non tralasciare che il tutto e adiacente l'arena di Sutri che in un unico comprensorio visitabile a piedi comprende: il mitreo l'arena con vicino una chiesa rupestre e una splendida area verde racchiusi tra la via Cassia (a pochi Km da Roma ) e scorci della...

Ancora una volta al Mitreo, stavolta per un'occasione davvero speciale e importante. Luca è un padrone di casa simpaticissimo, cordiale e professionale, che ti mette immediatamente a tuo agio. Il locale è informale ma pulitissimo e curato, abbiamo mangiato nella sala al pianoterra (ce n'è un'altra al piano superiore, comunque la capienza massima arriva a 28 persone). Il menu è vario e adatto anche a celiaci e vegetariani. Ottimi ed esageratamente abbondanti gli antipasti, che presentavano anche carciofi alla giudia e fritti di baccalà preparati al momento dalla mamma di Luca. I primi e i secondi non sono mai banali, sono presentati benissimo e le porzioni sono generose. Uno solo di noi è riuscito a mangiare anche un secondo, ma ci rifaremo presto la prossima volta. I prezzi sono ragionevolissimi, si spende come per un pub medio di Roma... con una differenza qualitativa e quantitativa notevole, per altro.
