Fukuyoshi Cafe really embodies the spirit of Asahikawa.
Practically everything, from the furniture, the menu, the ingredients used tells a story and are connected to the town one way or another.
The cafe’s signature item, the “Tokiwa-Yaki”, got its name from the address of the area which is called Tokiwa. It’s a special Danish pastry filled with various fillings, is modelled after the Asahi Bridge (which has been designated as a heritage of Hokkaido). Its cast was even made by one of the former best local cast smith.
The Fukuyoshi Latte, another specialty, uses the same red bean paste as the Tokiwa-Yaki, and is produced by the third generation of Fukui Seianj, the green tea used is produced by the third generation of the tea shop in Asahikawa Yoshikawaen. Both local artisans in their field.
The furniture used are also made by local Asahikawa artisans who brought fame to Asahikawan furniture. The interior uses a lot of wooden elements which makes it warm and cozy.
Personally both the Tokiwa-Yaki and Fukuyoshi Latte, though unique, tasted very ordinary. The red bean paste wasn’t fragrant and aside from its sweetness, there really isn’t much else.

Read moreThe cafe was a far walk from Asahikawa JR station but it’s worth it! To be honest I’ve never been a fan of red bean but the red bean used in the drink and pastry went very well with the matcha latte and croissant pastry. It was fragrant, with just the right sweetness unlike many other types of red bean paste I’ve tasted. (I must admit I’m not a fan of super sweet stuff). The interior is adorned with wooden furniture and gives warm vibes. The lady before me bought the last red bean Tokiwa-Yaki, yet the staff was nice enough to make another for me on the spot! (Took 10 min) I’ll come back if I visit Asahikawa again. Try the ginger ramen across...
Read moreFound this old school cafe from travel book recommendations, glad we dropped by. The ambience inside is cosy and relaxing! The strawberry red bean matcha latte is a perfect match overall, matcha chocolate kahlua is super thick and nice! The keema curry with cheese and sausage taste like satay sauce similar to sg as we opted for the sweet non spicy version. Roast beef was abit dry imo. The tokiwa-yaki is a must try since it is their signature! The red bean one has a sweet touch to it and the chocolate marshmallow is also great for kids. The pastry tasted very close to croissant. Do drop by to support them if you are in...
