Mangoo — Restaurant in Furano

When we got turned away on our first visit without a reservation I was a little peeved. Then a little more when I had to go through their very archaic system for a reservation.

So we showed up 2 nights later at our appointed time and I did not have a good impression from the staff whom I thought were rather transactional and unfriendly.

But the food! Gosh, it was one of the best Yakiniku experiences I’ve had. Mangoo isn’t a fancy place like the ones in Tokyo and you don’t get the kind of marbling on its beef like grade A5 wagyu but the chef selecting and slicing these cuts of meats is a real maestro. Either that or the quality of beef in Hokkaido is just that much better than the rest of Japan.

Soft, juicy and extremely tasty (beef umami) the different cuts presented varying delightful textures. And at very fair prices.

We were extremely disappointed with our experience at Mangoo. Due to heavy snowfall and treacherous road conditions, we arrived 10 minutes late for our reservation. Instead of understanding the situation, we were curtly turned away without any offer of accommodation or an alternative.

Given the weather and traffic challenges, a bit of flexibility and kindness would have gone a long way. We had been looking forward to dining here, but this lack of customer service left us frustrated and cold—literally and figuratively.

I hope the management reconsiders how they handle similar situations in the future, as rigid policies and poor empathy are not the ingredients for lasting...

Through worth of mouths we visited the restaurant in Furano, the things that I did right was getting the hotel front desk staff to make a dinner reservation for 4pax, coz I saw some walking in customers was turn away by staff apologetically. We ordered Wagyu beef, beef skirt, pork & chicken + vegetables. The wagyu beef loin really tender, while the chicken was juicy. Order was made through tablet electronically, it was a breeze… user friendly. On top of alert and responsive staff, the smoke suction was really strong which needed for Yakiniku. Very happy...
