Furano’s local specialty, or “gotochi gurume” (local gorumet) as they call it, is the Omu Kare (omelette curry rice), and Yuiga Doxon is one that is famous and very popular among the locals. It is a little wooden cabin that is nestled within a concrete urban landscape, as if it has been plucked right out from the woods and placed there.
There was already a long queue when we arrived and the waiting time was quite long as most of the customers preferred to be seated indoors. Fortunately the weather was quite cooling (about 20 degrees Celsius) and outdoor seats were available, so we didn’t mind sitting outside as we’re not so keen on waiting in line.
Now I’m not a fan of Japanese curry as most of the time they taste like it’s from a premix box, one dimensional and overly sweet. However, their curry isn’t like that. Instead it has an authentic and homemade taste, with deep bold flavours that comes from the various spices used (it is said that there’s 29 different types) and a nice little kick from the spiciness.
The curry went very well with the fluffy soft omelette, with its creamy middle which was still a lil runny inside. For the meat selection I had the ox tongue, which was very soft and tender and tasted pretty good.
My only regret is probably having chosen to be seated outside (there wasn’t a lot of leg room to stretch our legs with the cramped tables and chairs) rather...
Read moreWe visited this restaurant in Furano, drawn by its top rating on Tabelog. However, our experience was quite disappointing, both in terms of food and service.
We ordered all the recommended dishes: beef tongue, sausage, and omu rice. Unfortunately, none of them stood out. The curry, in particular, was very generic and lacked the attention to detail we've come to expect in Japan. Everything was served on a single plate, and the extra vegetables we ordered came as a salad with sweet dressing served on top of the savory curry sauce, which was an unappealing combination.
The service was the worst part of our visit. My mother-in-law hasn't been feeling well, so we have been asking for a cup of hot water for her in every restaurant we have been to. This restaurant outright refused, suggesting instead that we order tea from the menu, which wasn't an option for us due to its caffeine content. Even after explaining the situation, they still refused to provide hot water.
After checking the online reviews again, we noticed that recent reviews were not as positive, which matched our experience. It's a lesson that a high overall rating doesn't always reflect the current quality.
We hope this review helps the restaurant improve and maintain the reputation they've worked hard to build with over...
Read moreAn extremely disappointing meal after visiting upon reading the amazing reviews on google.
To ensure we have the full experience, we ordered 1 of the house special with the beef tongue, omelette, sausage and bacon, 1 of the standard beef tongue, omelette, sausage with cheese topping and 1 venison curry rice + drinks. Everything tasted average but it was the worst value for money meal I’ve experienced in my multiple visits to Japan.
The meat was on the tough end, the curry roux standard, and their house specialty sausage and bacon nothing extraordinary. The ambience indoor could be dramatically improved considering if you are stuck inside a hot cottage on a 35 degree Celsius, the restaurant should at the very least provide fan or some ice pack for airflow/ cooling the clients. All up we’ve spent about ¥9,000 for 3 adults and 1 baby, whilst the previous day we paid the same price for 5 adults + 1 baby including drinks when visiting a yakiniku restaurant with local friends who lives in Furano.
If you are a foreigner who hasn’t had much experience in Japanese curry or local cuisine you may find this delicious, but there are tonnes of better...
