This was our favorite dining experience in Hakuba and we really wish we had time to eat there twice. The food was so incredibly good and so well labeled for people with dietary restrictions. It was easy for vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, etc. and they had several English-speaking staff to assist. The ambiance in the very old building was incredible and traditional with beautifully exposed wooden beams and tatami floors. The service was prompt and professional and the food came out very quickly. The best part was the flavors, however. All the food here was absolutely delicious and every person at the table loved their dinner despite the wide variety of dishes we ordered. Highly recommend trying some variation of their soba, but honestly you...

We came an hour and a half before closing. There was a queue waiting to get seated, and we came before a few more people. We waited a bit checking out the menu. Then we noticed there was a list to write your name, but no one that came after us wrote theirs.

I asked to get a pen to write my name and they told me they just stopped accepting more people. I turned around and asked people before and after me and they just acted like dumb and say they all had their names written, which was not true.

We speak fluent Japanese, and there was no excuse to not serve us. Will not come back to this place, and I give them 1 star for that I consider racist attitude.

Do yourself a favour and go to a place where they treat you...

Our experience at ZEN was pleasant and seamless from start to finish. Our family of six was comfortably seated in a cosy, warm area, with a clear designated space to hang our coats.

The extensive menu catered well to all preferences, including vegetarians and vegans, making it a fuss-free and reliable choice for a family dinner. The service was smooth, and our food arrived in a timely manner without any delays.

The highlight of our meal was the grilled calamari and cold soba, both of which were absolutely memorable. The flavors were well-balanced, and the quality of ingredients was evident.

Overall, ZEN delivered a warm, enjoyable dining experience, and we’ll definitely...

saw this soba shop by chance, got in by luck. turns out their booked out but they had a gap of 1hr and they just sit us in. much appreciated. we went ahead to order a wagyu tataki to start and then the soba set with the tempura followed by the milk pudding with soba sauce to end. first up, the wagyu tataki was impeccable. just done nicely around medium served with daikon and house sauce. the in house handmade buckwheat soba was really smooth and the soup base was really yummy. tempura consist of green pepper, brinjal and a shrimp which was delicious as well. overall a really satisfying meal. will visit again if i come back to hakuba!

This restaurant serves excellent soba, both cold and hot. It was really delicious and the tempura was amazing as well. We ordered other side dishes like their tofu, garlic octopus and fried chicken. For a guy who doesn’t even bother ordering soba and let alone cold soba, thanks to this restaurant and its excellent food, I am now a true believer of it. Absolutely worth it and both the service and atmosphere was excellent as well. Lives up to what we know as true Japanese hospitality. I would recommend that you make reservations before going to the restaurant as it can get quite busy and packed.
