While exploring the beautiful island of Miyajima—after a short ferry ride from Hiroshima—I stumbled upon Yakigaki no Hayashi, a restaurant famed for its oysters. The long line outside already hinted that I was in for something special.
I ordered a set meal that let me try oysters prepared three ways: fresh, grilled, and tempura. Each one was excellent, but the grilled oysters truly surprised me. In my past experiences elsewhere, grilled oysters were often dry or lackluster—but here, because the oysters were huge, juicy, and fresh, grilling only enhanced their flavor. It was one of the highlights of my meal.
Of course, the fresh oysters were a classic—bright, clean, and tasting of the sea. And the tempura oysters were another delight: lightly battered, crisp, and expertly fried, as you would expect from Japanese tempura masters.
I also tried their eel, which was tender and flavorful—a great addition to the meal.
Between the incredible food, the bustling but cozy atmosphere, and the charm of Miyajima itself, Yakigaki no Hayashi made for an unforgettable stop. Highly recommended if you ever find yourself visiting this...
Read moreDuring my visit to Yakigaki No Hayashi, I encountered a queue at this restaurant during Tuesday lunchtime. However, the waiting time was surprisingly short, allowing me to quickly indulge in the culinary delights that awaited.
The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the raw oysters. They were simply fantastic—fresh, plump, and bursting with flavor. The oyster don, a rice bowl topped with succulent oysters, was equally delightful and left me craving for more.
It's worth noting that there is a difference between the Japanese menu and the English menu. The English menu tends to feature more expensive sets, while the Japanese menu offers a wider range of options, including more affordable choices. It appears that the intention is to encourage patrons to opt for the higher-priced sets. Nevertheless, despite the difference in menus, the overall quality and taste of the food were...
Read moreHad the raw/fried oyster set with oyster rice and it was absolutely delicious. I originally ordered the 4pc raw oyster but it was so delicious I ordered 2 more a la carte. They were so fresh and the lemon and ponzu sauce complimented the oysters so well. No sandy/gritty texture in them at all. My second favorite thing was the fried oysters. Perfectly battered and crispy, great meaty firm texture and the mayo/ketchup sauce on side went great together. I think the oyster rice was nothing to write home about, glad I got to try it but I wish I subbed it for the conger eel rice to have been able to try another popular Miyajima dish. Dined here around 2:30pm on a weekend and there was a pretty short line, only had to wait maybe 5min to get seated. They take...
