Yataro Sushi — Restaurant in Kagoshima

I came here after reading all the positive reviews but left disappointed. I ordered a sushi set of 3000 yen. As a sushi lover, I've tried a lot of sushi in my lifetime. However, the sushi here was mostly chewy and one had a chewy connective tissue and I couldn't chew or swallow it at all. I was a bit confused as to whether the fish in Kagoshima is supposed to be chewier than the usual sushi that I've tried in other regions. There were locals there who seemed like regulars so I'm not sure if a different cut of sushi was offered to us. For the price I think a sushi chain might offer better value.

Others have mentioned that the sushi chef is quite friendly but maybe only towards Europeans / westerners? He requested that a European couple sign on his world map to indicate their country of origin but did not ask us. Is it because we are Asian but not Japanese? He asked me and my mother to get up from our chairs so that the European couple can sign on the map next to me at the corner seat. I'm not sure if that's really necessary. Every visitor in Kagoshima should definitely visit this restaurant. It has very authentic atmosphere, and the sushi is very unique and tasty. We liked to sit at the sushi bar and watch how the sushi chef was making the sushi. Not only the ingredients but also the look of the sushi was so special and delicious. We got treated with Sochu (Kagoshima special drink made of sweet potato) by friendly locals who were also dining there. Also the sushi chef treated us with extra delicious goodies. We loved to communicate with locals as well as the restaurant staff who were so open and made our evening very memorable. Thanks a lot....

I visited here with my dad for celebrating his birthday while we were travelling in Japan. There was no English menu but I can speak little bit of Japanese, so not much trouble to order the food. We ordered one of the most expensive set menu, the staff girl was very friendly and tried hard to communicate with us which I found very kind and helpful. This restaurant seems quite busy, but we received delicious food and nice service. The head chef even gave us free food which was very tasty too! I recommend this place for good food and...
