Rating 4.0 How to choose the right Japanese wine. First, You may visit a limited time wine bar that rented a space in the "Ohama" restaurant. Then, you try 7-8 Japanese wines offered there by the glass. The owner and his wife visit wineries in Japan and carefully select awesome wines, which are changed every week or two. If you like any of these wines, you should make an appointment to visit the "Japanese Wine Shop Jan". This way, you are very sure to find a Japanese wine that it can't go wrong with. Jan opened a new door for me to Japanese wine, which I had not been so active in drinking before. Thank you very much. Definition of Rating: 5.0 A restaurant you should go to at all costs, no matter what 4.5 Restaurant you would recommend to others if you went, restaurant you would want to be a regular at 4.0 Restaurant that you will be quite satisfied with and will definitely return to 3.5 Restaurant that you are glad you went to and would probably go back to 3.0 Restaurant that you would not consider a mistake if you went 2.5 A restaurant that you could go to, but would be subtle 2.0 Not recommended 1.0 Restaurant that I would definitely not recommend going to

Jan is a little local gem of a wine bar. They specialize in Japanese wine and have a very impressive lineup from all over the country. The owner, Yoko-san is super friendly and very knowledgeable about Japanese wine (she’s has been to most of the wineries) Food is freshly made and a lovely mix of Japanese and western classics such a deep fried oysters (when in season), salads, tempura, pâté, karate, homemade shumai, etc. there is also a great selection of Japanese cheeses, ham and salami. Wine is both served by the glass or you can pick bottles directly from the fridge and enjoy in the bar. Prices are very reasonable especially if you drink by the bottle in a small group.

I had the pleasure of visiting Wine Shop Jan during a day trip to Kamakura, and it was a true highlight of my journey. Co-owner Keisuke Kato warmly welcomed me and introduced me to several Japanese wines, offering helpful recommendations and sharing his extensive knowledge. I took two bottles home with me. The environment was inviting, with shelves beautifully stocked with a curated selection of wines that highlight the unique craftsmanship of Japan’s wine regions.

Although they were preparing for the evening dinner during my visit, I didn’t try the food, but the shop’s atmosphere alone was worth the stop. Conveniently located just a short walk from the train station, this charming wine shop is a hidden gem for anyone visiting Kamakura. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or simply curious about Japanese wines, Wine Shop Jan is highly recommended. I look forward to returning on...
