Ōmi Chanpontei Shijō Karasuma — Restaurant in Kyoto

Found this nice restaurant specializing in champon noodles just a block from our hotel. It was raining in Kyoto all day and we decided not to venture out too far for dinner. Glad we found this place.

When you enter you need to use the machine to place your order (there is an english menu). We ordered the Golden Dashi Ramen (¥750) and the Fried Garlic Ramen (¥850) plus meat dumplings. The soup base was different from what we tasted so far here. The dashi ramen had a clear soup base that is salty, a bit sweet and garlicky (to those who have been in the Philippines, it, similar to the Batchoy soup). It very good and the noodles were chewy just the way I like it. The garlic ramen was similar except that its soup was darker (soy sauce?) and had a stronger garlic flavor. Our first meal in Japan! Convenient location, right across the street from our hotel and open late. Good portion sizes, self-ordering is easy to understand, fast service, and decently priced. Folks say that you can go to a random restaurant in Japan and find delicious food. I think this restaurant is a perfect example.
