Small shop, small queues start about 10 minutes before opening, after opening there are both locals and tourists who come. One group is allowed in at a time. The baguette is lovely, freshly baked, nice and crispy on the outside and airy yet substantive in the dough part. I think of all the places Iâve tried (Iâve tried a lot, I just donât have time to leave detailed reviews everywhere) itâs my second favorite after and bread but that is just a matter of individual preference (and bread is slightly chewier in a good way in my opinion and larger). This place does have a lot of options, more than other bakeries of similar caliber. I also tried their tart with bacon and onion and GruyÚre, so delicious, nice and smoky and the pastry melts in your mouth. I got their cream croissant which I will have later. Will update this review when I do! Some other breads I saw are pain de campagne, melon bread, some sandwiches, some biscuits, some stuffed croissants and it goes on. I was the first in line as I arrived 20 minutes before opening and the baguettes werenât ready yet so I waited in line for a few minutes while waiting for it to be brought out to me and was a bit nosy so looked at what some other people who seemed like regulars got, and it seems the salted croissant/ shio pan and a chocolatey bread and their brioche like breads were popular too so thatâs on my list next time!
Ps: the popular hitsuji donut is close to here, go get a ticket for purchase later before coming here (which I failed to do), theyâre meant to be the best in Kyoto if not Japan! I wouldnât know, I didnât get a ticket, but hopefully will next time. So this is a reminder for...
Read moreI firmly believe this is some of the best bread to be found in Kyoto. This is a charming one person shop with a wide variety of breads. We happened across it just as we were peckish for a snack and decided to try. We were recommended a small walnut roll by the staff and we took it to sit along the river.
It was absolutely delicious with large chunks of actual walnut. The bread was nice and fluffy, not too dense, and delicately flavoured. We will definitely be back, and it was definitely worth the walk...
