Kōdō Gyōgan-ji Temple — Attraction in Kyoto

革堂行願寺は一千年の歴史をもつお寺です。創建当時は一条通りにありました。戦乱や火災でいくたびも焼け、場所を替えつつも、人々の熱烈な信仰によってつねに都の中心部に再建されました。現在も西国観音霊場の第十九番札所として全国に知られる名刹です。 宗派: 天台宗 開基:行円上人 創建:寛弘元年（西暦１００４年） 御本尊:千手観世音菩薩 駒札です。 駒札： 革堂（行願寺） 霊麀山行願寺（れいゆうさんぎょうがんじ）と号する天台宗の寺院で、西国三十三所観音霊場の第十九番札所である。 寛弘元年（1004）に行円（ぎょうえん）上人によって、一条小川（上京区）に創建された。子を孕んだ母鹿を射止めてしまったことを悔いた上人が、常にその皮をまとって鹿を憐み、人々から皮聖（かわひじり）と呼ばれていたことから、この寺も革堂と呼ばれるようになったといわれている。 以後、人々からの厚いい信仰を受け、町堂として大いに栄えたが、度々の災火により寺地を転々とし、宝永五年（1708）の大火の後、この地に移された。 現在の本堂は、文化十二年（1818）に建てられたもので、堂内には行円上人の作と伝えられる本尊千手観音像を安置している。 境内には、都（みやこ）七福神巡りの一つになっている寿老人神堂を始め、愛染堂（あいぜんどう）、鎮宅霊符神堂（ちんたくれいふしんどう）、加茂明神塔（かもみょうしんとう）などがある。また、宝物館には、若い女性の幽霊が描かれている幽霊絵馬が展示されている。 京都市 Gyoganji Temple is a temple with a history of 1,000 years. Chanced upon this rare Buddhist temple on our way to the city centre. Nice architecture adorning the gate as well as interior of this building. There were a few people praying when we went in.
