This is a completely new property with very stylish public areas of lobby and restaurant. The hotel features a very nice onsen with one indoor and one outdoor spa soaking pool available to both gender sections. The indoor pool features clear water while the outdoor pool features milky opaque water both gently hot. Nice locker and bathing area with high quality shampoo, body wash etc.

The breakfast buffet is good but even at the “discounted” price it still runs at about $30 per person unless you have super high elite status with Bonvoy.

The staff is polite and helpful but tried to upsell me at check in claiming different conditions in their system than the Concur booking site I used. They were politely letting it go when I recited to conditions on Concur.

The biggest disappointment are the rooms. They are very nicely designed but decidedly “conventional Japanese”: tiny, mostly twin or single beds. Every floor features only two rooms with king beds, which are vibrating from an air handler system in the central courtyard that blows non stop - so I moved to an even smaller room with a queen bed. Additionally, the guest room windows are intransparent safety glass (means amber tinted with metal wiring) and in some rooms even the tiny slit that would open by sliding, that sliding window is locked, e.g. 441. Thus, you cannot let fresh air into your room by opening a window - unfortunately a frequent problem with Marriott properties.

However, at the end of the day those shortcomings are just detail. The chief offense is the size of the rooms. It’s just sad that an investor would sink so much money into a brand new and beautiful property and build a footprint, which is just not anywhere close to the expectations of a Western Brand hotel product - it feels like a very...

We spent three nights at The Chapter Kyoto. All in all, we really liked it. The hotel is well located, away from the crazy-busy tourist stuff but close to some good restaurants and the subway. The hotel is quiet. Staff are really friendly and helpful. ||The rooms are compact but well organized (except for the weirdly laid-out lighting and switches). Air temperature control is fine. The bed is a very generous-sized queen, and both the bed and the pillows are really comfy. Shower was great, and they had a really nice-smelling body/hand wash and lotion. The only issues we had with the room was that if you had a lot of luggage, there wasn’t anywhere to put it except on the seating area against the wall, and there was very little closet/drawer space. There was a tea kettle with some pour-over coffee options in the room, but to get an espresso you needed to go downstairs to the lobby and hope the finicky Nespresso machine was working. ||The gym is likewise compact but serviceable, with some cardio equipment, dumbbells (up to 45 pounds), kettlebells, benches and a couple mats. ||As Marriott Titanium members we opted for the breakfast, which was so-so (good salad/fresh veg, yogurts and some fresh fruit and granola/cereals; but bad coffee, egg options and pastries). We checked out the complimentary-for-members happy hour which was also so-so: pretty good glasses of white wine, but the snacks weren’t great. So in hindsight we’d have banked the points and scrounged up breakfast somewhere else, and we would’ve taken more advantage of some of the excellent wine bars close to the hotel. ||However, we did love the location and the room, and we would definitely stay here again if life takes us...

Our recent trip to Kyoto was a special one — a family journey with my wife, her parents, and her younger brother, celebrating my mother-in-law’s retirement after 40 years of dedicated service.||When we arrived, we were deeply touched by a beautiful surprise: a handwritten card and a dessert plate with the message "Congratulations on your retirement" — both prepared for my mother-in-law. What made it even more meaningful was that the card was personally written by Ms. Jun Kiyoung, one of the hotel staff. It was a sincere and unforgettable gesture.||The room was exceptionally clean and well-organized, and the public bath — open until 1:00 AM — was perfect for unwinding after a long day of walking.||While the hotel doesn’t have a traditional concierge desk, the front desk team more than made up for it. They kindly recommended local restaurants and even helped us make reservations during the busy Golden Week season — something we truly appreciated.||I would also like to give a heartfelt thanks to the young Japanese male staff member who assisted us at check-in. He greeted us with a warm smile and was extremely attentive throughout our stay. Although I received his business card, I unfortunately lost it during the trip. I regret not remembering his name, but his kindness truly stood out.||And of course, Ms. Jun Kiyoung’s thoughtful support and handwritten message made our experience all the more special and personal.||This wasn’t just a hotel stay — it became a meaningful part of our celebration and created a memory we’ll treasure as a family.|I wholeheartedly recommend The Chapter Kyoto for anyone planning a special occasion or...

Great location and hotel to get your zen back after Tokyo or Osaka. The hotel is in a great location and easily accessible by public transportation from the bullet train. The main shopping area and restaurants are about a 15 minute walk. There are also sightseeing landmarks within a 30min walk. The staff at check in were awesome and got some goodies upon arrival. They also upgraded my reservation and gave me options for a bigger room, but I decided on the larger room with a bigger bed. The happy hour for members is very limited from 5-630pm. They should really consider changing or extending the hours to 8pm. The staff stay behind the bar and don’t pick up plates so it would not be that big of a burden. The appetizers are very limited and I went there for the sake sampler. The rooms are not big, but fine for a couple. The bathroom is also small, but I was surprised that they provided a 3 step facial cleanser and moisturizer… so nice! There are no views, but the trade offs are worth it - the rooms completely blackout and the place is so quiet. I really booked the hotel for the public bath - beautifully designed for you to relax. I spent at least 2 hrs during a rainy day. So it’s a good alternative to bad weather or just a day for r&r. I was not a big fan of the breakfast, but I’m biased with having an American breakfast. I should have taken the points, but it was fine. The staff at the restaurant and during happy hour are great. They were always happy to welcome you. Overall, highly recommend and I would book again if I’m in town.

The Chapter is a great hotel in a central location in Kyoto. It has a boutique hotel feel that offers the benefits of being a Marriot Bonvoy property. Rooms are not big as is common in Japan, but in typical Japanese fashion they have maximized the space in the room so that it feels larger and yet cozy at the same time. The toilet and shower is separate, which is nice, and the bathroom and entrance area can be separated from the sleeping area with a traditional Japanese sliding door. Our room didn’t have a view (actually the window was frosted, and when opened just revealed the side of a building), but the hotel isn’t that the tall so I don’t think views are really why one should stay here. The hotel also has well-appointed gym, and a traditional Japanese bath. As I am a platinum bonvoy member we were given free breakfast which is served in the lobby restaurant. The lobby restaurant is open for lunch and also offers drinks in the evening (with Bonvoy platinum members and above getting free wine, beer, and sake), but the restaurant is not currently serving dinner. Staff was nice, although, mostly not from Japan which caused an issue with my invoice (long story short I am allowed a tax exemption and the first staff member I dealt with had no idea what I was talking about, and just shut me down, a manager rectified at check-out), but overall staff are friendly and accommodating. Overall, for the value and location – walking distance to a lot of restaurants – this is a great hotel to stay at when visiting Kyoto for any purpose.

We chose this hotel as the Westin was booked for our dates. We liked the idea it was within walking distance to most of the sites we wanted to see. However, once we got into the queen size bedroom. It was very, very small. Since we were traveling for 3 weeks in Japan we both had medium suitcases so we had to store them on the sofa. There were no dressers nor space to store our bags. We were here for 5 nights. We almost considered leaving the hotel because the room was so small. I called the front desk and they moved us to a room with twin beds. This room was bigger, but it still could not accommodate or luggage so we did leave them on the sofa again. At least, we could maneuver around the room. Now, what redeemed this hotel for us was their breakfast. They had tradition American eggs preparation, etc. They also had Ochazuke Kyoto breakfasts with rice or noodle base. Both were superb and it was nice experiencing another local Japanese cuisine. The happy hour was not very good. Only potatoes chips and salad. There was one employee who was very gracious and great service. Her name was Thao. One nice thing is the hotel had 2 washing machines and 2 dryers. Although I did not need to wash clothes, I tried them out and they worked very well. Dryer is 15 minutes and u need more to dry your clothes. Oh, one more thing, absolute no English on TV. Being a Marriott property this was a little surprising to us as the other two Marriott hotels we stayed in had English.
