I do not understand the high rating.
The food was just ok and so was the service. I was craving a burger and got the pulled pork burger. It was very small and came with a side of five small salad leaves. It was ok. A bit sad.
It’s not an expensive place but after paying 3,000+ JPY for unremarkable food (and feeling hungry), I felt a bit of regret.
I think the raving reviews come mostly from people who were despairing after overdosing on Japanese food during their travels, and would do anything for some bistrot food. This is not a 4.5+ stars eatery.
Notes for improvement: just please make the burger normal burger size. It looked sad. And add at least a tomato slice on the side or … something. For that price I can get much better food in proper steakhouses and burger places in Tokyo - never mind Kyoto where eating out is...

For tourists and particularly Americans, it's tempting to focus just on Japanese cuisine while staying in Kyoto, but you would be doing yourself an enormous disservice not to check this place out. For Kyoto natives, this restaurant is an opportunity to try New American cuisine that's a cut above what you would actually get in America. The restaurant's owner lived in NYC for 30 years and worked at one of President Clinton's favorite restaurants before returning to Kyoto to start her own business. Read moreWe came here on a Wednesday night and were the only ones there. I’m surprised it was so quiet because the food is AMAZING!
The restaurant is cosy and comfortable with a lovely atmosphere and friendly service. I highly recommend the Wagyu Steak, it was cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth. We also got a monthly special of local eggplant with prosciutto and cheeses (pictured). I’ve never tasted anything like it… such a beautiful combination of flavours, try it if you get the chance!
We spoke to the chef who is very experienced and knowledgeable. She also speaks great English if you have any questions. I highly recommend...
