Bistro Maumu — Restaurant in Kyoto

Firstly if you are interested in coming here for lunch on the weekend I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation online. I tried to go a week prior and they were totally full. When I came back with a reservation the next weekend it was packed again.

With that said, it was worth the wait! The hot chocolate was so creamy and delicious even in the blistering summer weather. The truffle fries were delectable and I’ll definitely come back for those two.

You may have to climb some fairly steep stairs to be seated on the second floor, but they do have bar style seating on the first...

Got the croissant set. Croissant had a nice crumb and texture but it felt a little dry and lacking in buttery flavor. Hot chocolate wasn't as rich and thick as I expected from social media posts. You can tell they use a nice quality dark chocolate/cocoa powder, but it really just tastes like slightly elevated Swiss Miss. It's missing some rich fattiness and complexity. I feel like I enjoy a disc of abuelita hot chocolate made with milk more than I did this. Not to mention it's 1650 after tax...

This was a perfect place to land for an afternoon snack! We stumbled in around 1 pm for a break after nishiki market. We were seated immediately in a comfortable and beautiful lounge.
