A Superb Morning Coffee Experience at Okaffe. Run by a Legendary Barista
On a rainy summer morning in Kyoto, we stumbled upon Okaffe, tucked away behind another building on a relatively busy street. The location is surprisingly quiet, offering a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. As we entered, two things immediately caught our attention: the impressive credentials of the head barista and the tranquil interiors.
The head barista, who runs the place, is a multiple-time winner of the Japan Barista Championship, securing first place in 2009, second in 2008, and third in both 2010 and 2012. Additionally, he achieved third place globally in the SCAE Latte Art Championship. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that a coffee legend would be preparing our morning brew.
The interiors of Okaffe are simple yet elegant, with large windows overlooking a traditional Japanese garden. The view of the garden adds a soothing touch to the ambiance, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. We were seated at the bar, which allowed us to watch the master barista at work. It was a delightful experience to see his expertise in action.
For breakfast, we ordered pancakes and a pork and rice dish, along with two cappuccinos. The food was delicious, complemented by a fresh salad. The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful, while the pork and rice dish was hearty and satisfying. The highlight, of course, was the coffee. The cappuccinos were superb, featuring perfectly pulled shots with rich, thick milk. Every sip was a testament to the barista's skill.
The overall experience at Okaffe was exceptional. The combination of a serene environment, delicious food, and top-notch coffee made for a memorable morning. Watching a highly trained barista craft our coffee was a treat in itself. If you're in Kyoto, I highly recommend visiting Okaffe for a tranquil and delightful...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreTo be honest, we came in looking for just a coffee and a baked good. Our curiosity got the best of us, and we took the risk on the naporitan - we were pleasantly surprised with it. It's not a classic Italian style, but a Japanese blend on it. Onto the coffee and cake. Get the matcha latte (unless you really don't like matcha). Seriously, do it. Well balanced to let the flavours of the matcha to come through. The bitterness is not pronounced and balances the natural sweetness in the latte. Possibly the best matcha I've had and possibly a good opportunity to step into the world of matcha. Mont Blanc is a nice play on the cake, coming on a bed of pancake. Cream is light and not overhwleming with the chestnut flavour pronounced in each bite. 3 types of drip coffee (1 being a guest rotating coffee) though the day, and a great selection of steamed milk drinks as well. I had the Dandy Blend - a little too dark for me personally, but certainly a quality...
