Hot Corner — Restaurant in Kyoto

I have never experienced such poor attitude from a restaurant. I came here with an old friend visiting from abroad, hoping for a nice meal after sightseeing nearby, but it turned into a very unpleasant experience.

Upon entering, the staff immediately complained about the bottled drinks we were carrying and insisted we couldn’t bring them inside. After sitting down, we were given a long list of rules to follow, making us feel more like prisoners than guests. Even basic items like hand towels weren’t provided at the start, but suddenly placed on the table halfway through the meal.

When it came time to pay, the restaurant only presented a slip with the total amount — no details of what we had ordered. When we asked for a proper receipt, they claimed they didn’t have one. Only after repeated requests did they reluctantly provide it.

My advice to other visitors: check the reviews carefully before deciding...

I wasn’t even able to dine in here as I was refused at the door, It was around 10pm, I was asking apologetically saying “ sorry I didn’t have a table booked but is dining available ?” The owner said sorry it’s now closed while people are there eating, the place showed it closes at 24:00! I am a Japanese middle aged woman looking for a quick dinner before sleep as I just arrived in Kyoto to have an important meeting in the following morning. The restaurant was still open when I passed by it after checking in a hotel and went to eat Ohsho restaurant alone! What a discreetly unwelcome it is, ichigensan okotowari or booking required should be written or tell me straight if you only take guests by recommendation so I wouldn’t bother going to any of these places. I am relocating to Kyoto next year with my husband. I wonder how I can avoid unwelcome restaurants such as...

Really polite staff considering our very poor Japanese efforts, more than happy to help with anything.
