Ichiran Ramen (一蘭), a renowned ramen chain specializing in tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen, has a popular branch in Kyoto, known as Ichiran Kyoto Karasuma Store (一蘭 京都烏丸店). Located conveniently in the bustling Karasuma area, this branch offers visitors a quintessential Ichiran experience, blending delicious food with a uniquely focused dining atmosphere. Ichiran is famous for its signature tonkotsu ramen, which features a rich and creamy pork-based broth, perfectly cooked thin noodles, and toppings like green onions, chashu pork, and their signature red spicy sauce, made from a secret recipe. The broth’s depth of flavor is balanced by the customizable options that allow diners to choose the richness, spiciness, noodle firmness, and other aspects of their bowl, ensuring a personalized ramen experience. What sets Ichiran apart is its unique dining booths, designed to enhance the solitary enjoyment of ramen. Each diner sits in an individual booth equipped with a curtain separating them from the staff, ensuring minimal distractions. This setup is perfect for those who wish to savor their meal in peace, focusing solely on the flavors. The Kyoto Karasuma branch maintains the iconic Ichiran atmosphere while offering a convenient location for tourists and locals exploring the city’s vibrant shopping and cultural scene. Whether you’re a ramen aficionado or a first-timer, a visit to Ichiran Kyoto Karasuma guarantees a flavorful, immersive experience that highlights the artistry of Japanese ramen culture.

I’m writing this review as a foreigner from Canada who had their thirteenth birthday today. Personally as an introverted and picky eater, I enjoyed this experience wholeheartedly! I was lucky enough to have no line :) Atmosphere: You are provided with space and privacy so you can enjoy your food in peace. I didn’t find it very loud in there either so I was happily able to enjoy my ramen! —————————————— Service: In your cubicle contains a water refilling station and a sheet to fill out your preference in ramen. You are as well, seated facing a small window where the staff cannot see your face or you can’t see theirs either. There is no need for foreigners to talk to anyone, including the staff. The service is quick and efficient. I can’t forget that the staff are also friendly and welcoming! Overall, the service was quite excellent! —————————————— Food: I’m a picky eater and a hater of many things like veggies for example so I don’t have much to say about the toppings. However, the soup was scrumptious and one of the only times I haven’t given the bowl for my dad to drink. The noodles were scrumptious too and is customized well to my preference. I even asked for three more refills because of how much I enjoyed the food :D I’m so glad that we were given an option to customize our ramen bowl. Overall, I enjoyed this experience very much and I’m more than delighted to come again!!

I only heard of ichiran from friends but never knew what it actually is... which it appears to be food + an experience. I ended watching a video and reading a guide to fully understand it. This localization also has an English menu which was helpful. Summary: Food = Delicious and seems very customizable which makes me want to go again. Staff = helpful if you need them! By once again the point seems to be able to eat ramen and not have anyone bother you. Notes: If you’re an expert, you can do the whole thing without really talking to anyone - which appears to be the point. Not to fret if it’s your first time! The staff at the front would come out and make sure people understand the machine to order your food. I only bought the base ramen (less than 900 yen) but I might try the select 5 (~1500 yen) which lets you select extras. Step by step: 1. Insert money 2. Select food (base, or extras) 3. When done press change (red button?) 4. Take ticket inside and someone will seat you. 5. Fill out sheet for ramen customization - recommended options are dotted :) 6. Place ticket on table and someone will come take it (I didn’t even have to speak!) 7. Wait for food! If you want extras but didn’t order it on your ticket, you will have to fill out the second sheet they give you and TALK to someone *gasp*! Also there’s a facet thing which is cold water!
