I hesitate to give any small business a low rating, especially at a time like this when business is being bullied by hysterical governments & public panic, into closing early, or even closing completely. But I have to say, I wasn’t at all impressed with the food or the atmosphere in this restaurant. Many reviews say that this is true to authentic Italian pizza, and it may well be, I’ve never visited Italy, so I wouldn’t know. But if this is authentic Italian style pizza, then I guess I just don’t like Italian style pizzas.

The first thing that irritated me is that we weren’t offered water, freely, as I feel should be standard procedure in any restaurant. You have to buy an overpriced drink (Apple juice is 500 yen) or be charged 300 yen -for each person- for not ordering any drink at all. So essentially we were charged 1200 yen just for my myself, my wife & two very young children, to be able to get a glass of water. To me this is unforgivable. I only drink water when I eat, as it is my preference, and I don’t find it all reasonable for a restaurant to charge for it. Were it not for this, I may have been more generous in my rating. We started with a plate with a few slices of ham and a few slices of salami, which were quite nice, but as seems to be normal in this restaurant, vastly overpriced for what it was. Had they given us a bowl with some olive oil & balsamic vinegar, and some fresh bread to go with it, the price may have been more reasonable, but they didn’t. As my Sicilian friend often says, “no bread no eat”. I expected more from an apparently ’authentic’ place.

The margherita pizza was very small, and very lightly topped with watery tomato and very little cheese. It didn’t taste bad, but it didn’t taste great either, it didn’t have much flavor at all. The crust of the pizza was decent, but everything other than the crust was floppy & soggy (I mean really wet) and I really don’t know why anyone enjoys a pizza like that. Watery tomato & minimal cheese on top of soggy bread isn’t great food in my view. The other pizza we ordered (I forget the name) had some ham & rocket leaves on it, it had a little more flavor than the margherita, but again, was very small, expensive, & the whole pizza other than the crust, was very soggy and floppy. We also ordered a couple of bowls of fried potato wedges (600 yen each), those were quite nice, but you didn’t get much, probably one potato’s worth of wedges in each bowl; far too expensive. We also ordered a bowl of meatballs in sauce, which only tasted reasonable, rather than memorable, but the portion was very small, and again overpriced; I think it was 600 yen, and there were only 6 tiny meatballs in the sauce.

To summarise- this restaurant has unimpressive food which is massively overpriced. We didn’t really feel welcome there, & didn’t feel any warmth or hospitality from the owners, which is really awkward in such a small restaurant. We won’t be returning to this restaurant. Again, I hate to give poor reviews, but reviews should be honest, or what’s the point. If I were a restaurant reading this review, rather than feel bad, I’d just improve my game.

*EDIT: In response to the owner’s comments.

As you can gather from the owner’s response, there’s a bad attitude to contend with if you go to this restaurant. I mean, disagreeing with a customer review is one thing, but lying about a noisy entrance to the restaurant, and saying you’re glad the customer didn’t like your restaurant; in essence saying we don’t want you to come back, is quite another. My wife, who is Japanese, went in first before the children & I, and politely asked if we could come in. There was no noisy entrance, and our children were extremely well behaved the entire time. I understand it hurts to get a poor review, but the smart response is to take the criticism on board, and aim for improvement. Not lie & attack the reviewer. Over 10,000 yen for 2 very small, soggy pizzas, & a few tiny sides dishes. This restaurant is one to avoid. Bad attitude & mediocre, vastly...

One of our favorites around Kitayama. Child-friendly and delicious, good service too. When you eat in, be aware that you can order many things besides pizza! While northern style pizza with ham and mushroom is our favorite, burrata cheese with anchovies is amazing too, as are their deserts. Calzone opened our eyes to what is possible. Also, the tagliata is one of the best steak I ever ate. We will be back (as we have...
