Sushi Sei — Restaurant in Kyoto

Beware, this is a tourist trap. The fish is not very fresh and the rice texture is off. There are many better options nearby.

We visited on a saturday night, and the first clue should have been the proportionally large number of white people inside. Second clue.. it was almost empty on a saturday night. Third clue should have been when the server took a very long time (10 minutes) before coming to take our order. The shrimp sushi was great, the snapper was also good. Salmon mediocre, tuna was terrible with a long fishy aftertaste.

Also, we were overcharged for several items that we had ordered but did not receive, as well as one that we did not order and did not receive. I tried to explain this to the host but he either didn't understand or didn't want to understand, so I paid the bill and left to write this review.

Very mediocre tourist trap sushi, I should have known when I noticed there were more foreigners than local customers. The menu serves cucumber rolls says it all! The ingredients were not very fresh. I ordered a uni that looked questionable. Luckily, the restaurant let me cancel it. I spat out another piece of sushi because the fish tasted like it was left from lunch. The tamago was frozen and still a bit hard inside. Ingredients were definitely not too fresh, thus they don't offer sashimi. I've had conveyor belt sushi in Japan that was better than this. If your expectation is a box of sushi from a safeway grocery store, it might not be too bad~ not for sushi snobs looking for good...

Amazing spot to get omakase sushi at a reasonable price at $35ish CAD per person. This spot is extremely popular with the locals and we had to wait in line before it even opened to get a spot at the counter. There are about 10 spots at the counter and a few booth seats, easier to get a spot with parties of 2 or less for the counter. A lot of elderly japanese locals were there right at 5pm and few friendly english speaking ones were there when I went and raved about this place. The food was fresh and honestly the best I had in Kyoto. Would definitely recommend to others! The chef was friendly but spoke limited English but that didn't affect the experience. I would come back in...
