Wagyu Volcano OAGARI, Gion — Restaurant in Kyoto

We got there and got our queue number. It was about 45mins wait which was ok since we could visit other shops around the area. So much better than queuing and waiting in line. The place is very small. Be prepared to be split up if your group is big.

The basic wagyu bowl has layers of thinly sliced wagyu draped over a bowl of rice onto the plate with a raw egg yolk at the top. You can add toppings to complete the IG look.. duck breast, scallops, uni, roe, wagyu steak etc. Towards the end, you get to add soup stock and condiments to the rice. Nice but nothing too impressive. The wagyu beef is ok nothing too fantastic. Not really worth the wait since there are other better wagyu beef places.

BUT. The raw wagyu yukhoe was something else! Had to order extra after trying it. So if you’re into raw beef then YES! Do give this...

Easily the best meal I had in Kyoto. We were lucky that we reached 5 minutes before they stopped issuing out numbers. Be sure to go up to the restaurant to take your queue numbers. You can then go around shopping and they will notify you to come back thru email if you are a foreigner.

The beef slaps. They lightly blow torched it and layered it over the rice. The basic bowl without any toppings costed us 1900 Yen but you have to add on the other toppings. The combination of uni and salmon roe made the whole thing so creamy and indulgent in every bite. The only regret I have till now was not adding on the steak to the bowl for an even greater...

Service is great here! One of the many more enthusiast high energy staff and also willing to communicate in English!

Place is not compact nor very spacious. But still comfortable. Enough to have a good meal!

Presentation of the food ( basically meat and rice) is made into a volcano shape which I think isn't necessary. But tasted pretty decent. Not to mention there's no queue too for this place!

Meat is tender and some parts seems rare. You have to mix the rice and meat in another bowl and add soup into it to consume. Tasted really nice but nothing mind blowing.

Will come back again but definitely not a feeling that makes me crave to come back every...
