Read moreLook there's no denying it- the interior of this place is super aesthetic. It's tiny, it's packed full of detail, it feels both incredibly designed but also totally natural. While we did buy the picnic set we waited inside for it to be prepared and it's an incredibly evocative space. It feels like the set of an indie movie. However, the picnic experience itself was a little disappointing. First of all they charge you for every little thing, stools, table, a mat- they even rent hats out. Secondly the coffee itself is very expensive and you only get a few small biscuits with them. We sprung for the pound cake just for a little more than they were both pricey and fairly small. The location is good- just a few minutes away from the river bank. And we did enjoy the (excellent) coffee and the (decent) cake on the riverside- we even sprung for the mat.
However I would say unless you want to splurge for the pure aesthetics of a table, chairs, etc on the river I would just have a coffee inside- so you can enjoy the best part of this place which is...
Read moreBefore arriving to Kyoto, Kyoichi-san was the first local I've contacted to inform how anticipating I am on the first trip to Japan and first ever family picnic with the wife-and-husband team as our host.
Both of us tentatively set an appointment at 11am before noon. It's certainly no easy feat, after passing by local residential houses, we finally made it 11 minutes before the last picnic session by the historical Kamogawa river.
We were welcomed warmly by Ikumi-san. Meanwhile preparing our coffee, a bit or two introductions on how we got to know their dreamy place and how it inspired us all the way from Malaysia to experience it. Once ready, off we go with a long bench, small table, little chair, large mat and not forgetting the lovely picnic basket with coffee, cookies and cake!
As we return after an-hour-and-a-half, the wife and husband are so anxious to know how was our first picnic by the Kamogawa river, did our Little Boy enjoy the picnic and his "outdoor" colouring and drawing session....
